Skulls, jaws and teeth of wild terrestrial small mammals (Sciuridae, Soricidae, Erinaceidae, Talpidae, Gliridae, Arvicolidae, Muridae) are occasionally affected by anomalies and pathologies. The present study documents a total of 362 anomalies and 122 pathological changes across 20 different species. These are all based on data published in Germany, supplemented by our own records. Cases were classified into 14 different categories, according to bone and dental anomalies, fractures and inclusions, bone proliferation, dental disease and extreme wear of teeth. An additional category to specifically account for bone proliferation of the skull was not needed, but such findings are to be expected. The most frequent finding was abnormal tooth growth, particularly the elongation of the upper incisors. In individual cases, there was evidence that small mammals are able to recover even from serious injuries to the skull.

A craniometric study was conducted on a sample of 209 specimens of the Iberian desman, representing the main areas of the species’ distribution range: Pyrenees, Iberian System, Cantabrian area, Atlantic area, and Central System. No age differences were found in the sample but, conversely to previous reports, results revealed a slight sexual dimorphism in size. Multivariate size and shape analyses performed on both sexes separately indicated that the Pyrenean sample is the one that differs most from the others. Skull of specimens from the Atlantic area was smaller than those from the Cantabrian area, Iberian System, and Central System, and very similar in size to the desmans from the Pyrenees. Nevertheless, in the canonical plots for size and shape both males and females from the Atlantic area clearly fall within the range of variation of non-Pyrenean desmans. Although our analyses showed that there is a general morphological skull differentiation between the two classic subspecies of the Iberian desman described in the literature, it is clear that further morphological and genetic studies are needed to clarify the infraspecific taxonomy of this species fully.

We compared cranial, dental, bacular and chromosomal variables between a population of Graphiurus murinus collected in riverine forest in the Andries Vosloo Kudu Reserve (AVKR) near Grahamstown (N= 32), and another from Afromontane forest at Hobbiton on Hogsback (HH), in the Amathole Mountains (N=21), Eastern Cape, South Africa. AVKR dormice were significantly larger in 13 out of a total of 23 cranial dimensions and they had a relatively longer rostrum. The 4th upper premolar was clearly longer and the tip of the baculum broader in the sample from HH. Discriminant function analyses of cranial and dental parameters perfectly separated the two samples. The karyotypes were the same at both localities (2n= 46; NFa = 92) but differed from previously reported karyotypes of Graphiurus species from Africa.
For the evaluation of sexual dimorphism 739 red fox skulls (including 433 males and 306 females) from the Czech Republic were examined. The individuals younger than six months were excluded from the study of sexual dimorphism and the rest was divided into three age classes (individuals at the age of 6.5–12 months, 12.5–24 months and 24.5 months and older). Skull size differences between males and females were significant in all age classes. Males exceeded females in all dimensions with the exception of postorbital breadth, which was wider in females. Other skull shape differences between males and females were not confirmed. Age class including individuals 12.5–24 months old was the only, in which significant skull shape differences were found. We suppose that competition between males could play the major role in sexual dimorphism formation.
The last specimens of indigenous Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) in Croatia were exterminated around year 1903. Lynx dispersed back to Croatia after six animals were reintroduced to Slovenia from Slovakia in 1973. Considering the consequences of founder effect, genetic drift and expected high level of homozygosity, the goal of this paper was to determine variation in teeth number, teeth and skull disorders in Croatian lynx. It should also determine whether there has been a change in frequency of occurrence of developmental anomalies in relation to the population it originates from and in relation to other lynx populations. We studied 58 lynx skulls originating from the reintroduced lynx population. Changes on teeth and skull were found on 23 skulls (39.7%): supernumerary maxillary second premolar P2 (9 skulls, 15.5%), supernumerary mandibular second molar M2 (3 skulls, 5.2%), congenitally absent maxillary incisor (3 skulls, 6.9%), extra tooth between maxillary third incisor I3 and canine (1 skull, 1.7%) and acquired disorders of teeth and skull (9, 15.5%).

Zjevně to byl záměr objednavatele.
