Antrakologická analýza provedená na reprezentativním souboru uhlíků získaném systematickým plavením výplní zahloubených objektů na sídlišti kultury s vypíchanou keramikou v Kolíně poskytla poněkud netypické spektrum dřevin mladšího neolitu. Místo očekávaného souboru stanovištně náročných listnáčů a dubu se v lokalitě vyskytoval soubor dubu s významným podílem borovice a příměsí nenáročných listnatých dřevin (bříza, líska, jabloňovité) typických pro společenstva acidofilních doubrav. Článek pojednává o historii, metodických možnostech, úskalích a výhodách rekonstrukce lesní vegetace pomocí antrakologické analýzy (analýzy uhlíků) z archeologických lokalit. Na konkrétním příkladu antrakologického spektra z Kolína rekonstruuje lesní vegetaci v zázemí neolitické lokality. and The anthracological analysis conducted on a representative assemblage of charcoal acquired in the systematic wet sieving of the fill of cut features at the Stroked Pottery culture settlement in Kolín produced a rather atypical spectrum of Late Neolithic trees. Instead of the anticipated assemblage of environmentally sensitive deciduous trees and oak, the site featured oak with a prominent share of pine and a mix of undemanding deciduous trees (birch, hazel, apple) typical for acidophilic oak communities. The article addresses the history, methodological possibilities, pitfalls and advantages of the reconstruction of forest vegetation using the anthracological analysis (analysis of charcoal) of data collected from archaeological sites. The work presents a brief summary of anthracological data from the Neolithic period in the territory of the Czech Republic, emphasising the importance of the method for this type of reconstruction as a source of information independent of pollen data. Using the concrete example of the anthracological spectrum from Kolín, the article reconstructs the forest vegetation surrounding Neolithic sites.
Archaeobotanical analyses of 9 sediment samples (8 contexts) yielded 469 charred and mineralised seed and fruit remains andal and wood fragments. An assemblage of approximately 50 plant taxa contain many useful plants and is used to reconstruct the vegetation in the vicinity of the site.
The proportion of individual cereals seems to correspond with the “early medieval standard” for Czech Republic, with the dominance of naked wheat (Triticum aestivum typ.) in carbonised and high proportion of millet (Panicum miliaceum) in mineralised subassemblage. Wild plants (mostly ruderal and segetal species) document the existence of synanthropic habitats in open, non‑forested landscape.
The taxa determination of charcoal and wood remains provide evidence that oak has been used as the most important fuel wood and construction timber. Wood for fuel and construction were obtained predominantly from mesophilic oak woodland with hornbeam and from alluvial hardwood forests, both strongly affected by human impact.
Výzkum nivy Robečského potoka zachytil dvě erozní události, které jsou následkem odlesnění a vzniku polí, první v době existence laténského sídliště a druhá nejspíše po založení středověké vsi Okna. and The study deals with the prehistoric development of the Bezděz – Doksy region in Northern Bohemia, with special regard to the excavation of the La Tène settlement at Okna that is cautiously ascribed to the Kobyly group. The settlement is assessed according to the data obtained by palaeobotanic, geobotanic and sedimentologic research of the site as well as the whole studied region which is largely comprised of boreal forest. Its possible use in prehistory and the reasons of late colonization of agricultural lands in its immediate vicinity, which occurs only in late La Tène period and subsequently in the Middle Ages, are discussed. Survey of the alluvial plain of the Robečský brook revealed two erosion events which may be results of deforestation and establishment of fields, first during the existence of the La Tène settlement and the last probably upon foundation of the medieval village of Okna.
Na závěr je diskutovaná otázka pohřebních mohyl starší doby bronzové v severní polovině Čech. and The article presents the results of the comprehensive research of a remarkable Únětice culture find situation in central Bohemia – a barrow burial. An almost undisturbed stone ring and a burial pit from former settlement feature were found in a cultural layer in Brandýs nad Labem – Vrábí. The grave contained two inhumation burials one above the other and buried probably separately in time. The character of graves, their inventories (including botanical and zoological finds) and the later treatment of the human remains show the specific practices of the Early Bronze Age burial rite. Supported by radiocarbon dating, the chronological identification of the unit corresponds to similar finds in Germany and Poland, however, it is in contradiction to the conventional dating of pottery in Bohemia. The final part of the article discusses the issue of burial barrows in the Early Bronze Age in the northern half of Bohemia.
Populaci využívající návrší Cezavy lze zařadit mezi skupiny živící se především smíšenou stravou s převahou rostlinných zdrojů. and The aim of the multidisciplinary analysis of bioarchaeological sources from the Cezavy site near Blučina (Brno-venkov district) was to contribute to a reconstruction of the food sources of the local population at the beginning of the Late Bronze Age. The buccal dental microwear and isotopic analyses of anthropological material indicate that the diet of all individuals was mixed; a various plant ratio was inferred in nine individuals, whereas eight individuals had a higher meat intake, of which the main source were small ruminants (sheep/goat) and domestic pig. Other sources of meat were irregular; aside from hunted game, isotope analysis showed the consumption of marine fish in three males. Since strontium isotope analysis indicated that these individuals had never migrated, the marine fish must have been brought to this territory as a preserved import. Cereal grains, roasted at the site in their spikelets and glumes, played a key role in the plant component of food. Despite not being prepared for consumption, in this form they could have been a suitable object for a burnt sacrifice. The population living on the elevated Cezavy site can be classified among groups with a mixed diet, with a predominance of plant sources.
Ačkoliv ekologické nároky pravěkých obilnin nejsou známy, ukazuje se, že prospívaly za podobných podmínek jako dnešní odrůdy a strategie pravěkého zemědělství byla podobná dnešním neindustriálním zemědělským komunitám, to znamená dosažení stabilní úrody pomocí vhodného výběru optimálních plodin vzhledem k lokálním podmínkám. and The study deals with: a) the relationship between prehistoric settlement and soil within the territory of today’s Bohemia, b) the relationship between cereals grown in prehistory and selected parameters of the environment, specifically the soil productivity, throughout the territory of the whole Czech Republic. The relations between archaeological periods/cultures and soil types on the level of macro-region can be divided into four groups generally corresponding the development of prehistoric arable agriculture. All prehistoric cultures using arable farming as the main subsistence strategy settled preferentially high-quality soil regions. However, they were able to farm on lower quality soils, too. The strong bond between settlement and the best arable soils ceased to apply during the later phase of the Early Bronze Age but it reappeared at the end of prehistory, especially during the Migration period. The most important environmental variable influencing the composition of cereals preserved within prehistoric macroremains assemblages is the quality of soil. This is manifested by the proportional representation of cultivated wheat and barley: as the soil quality goes down, the ratio of barley increases, while wheat decreases. Though the environmental demands of prehistoric cereals are not known, it turns out, that they thrived under similar conditions as current varieties and, moreover, the strategy of prehistoric arable farming was similar to present-day non-industrial farming communities, e.g. the stable yield was achieved through adequate choice of optimal crops corresponding local conditions.
K zajímavým paleoekologickým zjištěním patří např. nízký vliv raně středověkého osídlení na lesní vegetaci a mezofilní charakter lesních porostů v nivě Povelky a Moravy, důraz na pěstování prosa a vysoký podíl žita mezi pěstovanými obilninami. and This contribution deals with an extensive collection of botanical ecofacts obtained in the years 1985–1987 at the early mediaeval site Olomouc-Povel (Zikova street). The settlement was surveyed in the 1980s, and due to the uniqueness of the situation it was interpreted as a pre-Great Moravian administrative and power centre. The excavation also included the collection of plant ecofacts and the sampling of sediments under study with the purpose of obtaining plant remains by flotation. The sampling was carried out with the aim to characterize the natural environment and basic attributes of the economy of the settlement agglomeration. Continuously waterlogged sediments made it possible to obtain, besides commonly encountered charred plant remains (charcoal pieces, charred plant macroremains), also a large amount of uncharred plant macroremains (seeds, fruits, uncharred wood), including a uniquely preserved set of leaf blades. Notable palaeoecological findings include, for example, a low influence of early mediaeval settlement on woodland vegetation and a mesophilous character of woodland stands in the basins of the rivers Povelka and Morava, an emphasis on the cultivation of proso millet, and a high proportion of rye among cultivated grain crops.
Strategie obživy a její vývoj v raně středověké společnosti byla studována na základě nálezů souvisejících se zemědělskou výrobou a následným zpracováním produktů. and Multidisciplinary research based on the interpretation of data acquired by archaeological and natural science methods and their correlation. The main objective is to reconstruct the interaction of factors of the environment and the living conditions of human communities and their development from the 6th until the early 12th century. The study will draw on research of the complex of the Great Moravian centre at Pohansko near Břeclav (South Moravia), its surroundings and hinterland. The subsistence strategy and its development in the early medieval society was studied on the basis of finds related to farming production and the subsequent processing of the products.
