Multi-agent system is a system of autonomous, intelligent but resource-bounded agents. Particular agents have to be able to make decisions on their own, based on the activities of other agents and events within the system as well as in its environment. To this end agents make use of their own internal knowledge base which serves them as a memory. In this paper we focus on the design and management of such a knowledge base. After a brief description of some classical fundamental approaches to the knowledge base management, we propose an improvement based on the application of statistical methods. The paper tries to analyze critically what is usually taken for granted - the causal relation between empirical knowledge about external world and the world which is (supposedly) known. The aim is neither to propose a new definition of knowledge nor to restate an old one but rather to take a closer look at the claim that knowledge is a true belief caused in a proper way by facts, events, etc. of the external world. This claim is a core of the epistemological approach usually labeled as ''causal theory of knowledge'', but there are many causal theories distinct from each other. The paper therefore sketches the causal components of D. Davidson’s epistemology and the roles they play in the process of cognizing, first. Barry Allen’s criticism of the traditional definition of knowledge seems to share a radical tone with Stephan Vogel’s con-cerns about the customary representation of the causes that lie be-hind our current environmental problems. Both philosophers voice their complaints about the Cartesian picture of the world and dismiss the core idea behind the notorious duality embedded in that picture. What they propose instead is a monistic perspective positing an ar-tifactual networking. In this paper, I will try to draw attention to certain weak aspects of Allen’s refreshing description of knowledge as “superlative artifactual performance” and offer a way to improve that characterization via Vogel’s notion “wildness”. More specifically, I will propose a solution to the problems pertaining to the distinction between good and bad artifacts with respect to the epistemic criteria proposed by Allen, and claim that the temporal gap standing in be-tween the expectations of a designer and the qualities of her design may contribute to our understanding of the nature of an artifact. I maintain that each creative attempt to know a given artifact is to be appreciated by recognizing its different uses. In doing so, I will also try to show why and how certain bad artifacts get their undesir-able status because of leading up to techno-cultural stagnation.
A significant and interesting part of the post-Gettier literature regarding the analysis of propositional knowledge is the attempt to supplement the traditional tripartite analysis by employing a fourth condition regarding the defeasibility of evidence and thus to preclude the counterexamples displayed in Gettier’s original article. My aim in this paper is to critically examine the sort of externalism that accompanies the most promising of the proposed fourth conditions, due to Pollock, in order to offer some fresh insights on this old epistemological issue. I argue that Pollock’s paradigmatic treatment of the matter gives rise to a critical problem with regard to the exact role of the fourth condition and its relation with the onto-semantic or alethic condition of propositional knowledge, to wit, truth. In the light of this discussion, I draw certain conclusions about epistemic externalism and point out some of its theoretical shortcomings., Významnou a zajímavou součástí post-gettierovské literatury týkající se analýzy výrokových poznatků je pokus doplnit tradiční tripartitní analýzu využitím čtvrté podmínky týkající se nedotknutelnosti důkazů a tím vyloučit protiklady uvedené v původním článku Gettiera. Mým cílem v tomto příspěvku je kriticky zkoumat druh externismu, který doprovází nejslibnější navrhované čtvrté podmínky, a to díky Pollockovi, s cílem nabídnout nové pohledy na tuto starou epistemologickou otázku. This article assesses efforts to develop "open innovation". First, open innovation is put in the framework of knowledge society. It is shown that the term open innovation refers tu such different cases that it is better to assess them separately. Chesbrough´s "open innovation", the "lead user" conception, the idea of "commons-based-peer-production" and "interactive value production" is shortly explored. "Incertitude" is overviewed as basic background that urges societal praxis to turn to open innovation. The study expresses some personal experiences based on long collaborations and contacts with specialists in engineering or design spheres during more than two decades. These specialists had mostly bad experiences with some opinions or standpoints carried out by the decisions called as political or in the public interests or, as it was usually denoted, in the people’s interests. It was A.M. Weinberg (former US presidents’ scientific adviser and director of great laboratories) who emphasized that the public frequently cannot know what the best is. The public meaning could be manipulated by means of simple slogans, emotional elements or simplified conceptions concerning the sphere and level of risks., Studie vyjadřuje některé osobní zkušenosti z dlouhodobé spolupráce a kontaktů s odborníky v oblasti inženýrství nebo designu v průběhu více než dvou desetiletí. Th is article proposes some refl ections on the status of the quadrivium in the epistles X–XIV of one of the best known encyclopaedia of the Brethren of Purity Rasā’il, by reconstructing the implied methodology of how the quadrivium is applied within a theoretic philosophy and therefore how all these aspects concur in order to obtain demonstrations that are in complete cohesion with soundness. Following a hermeneutical methodology, this research explores the ways to get to the universal truth and how exactly one arrives to it. Th e fi rst part explains what perceived science is and what its defi ning features are, while the second part illustrates a distribution of the application of the quadrivium in relation with what the Brethren of Purity established as methods of acquiring knowledge. Finally, the last part evaluates some examples that can be traced from a ground of the quadrivial disciplines in order to show how some elements of formal logic are evaluated. and Článek nabízí refl exi statusu kvadrivia v listech X–XIV jedné z nejznámějších encyklopedií Bratrstva čistoty Rasā’il a rekonstruuje v ní zahrnutou metodologii užívání kvadrivia v rámci teoretické fi losofi e, tedy jak v něm jsou získávány naprosto korektní důkazy. Pomocí hermeneutické metodologie jsou zkoumány způsoby, jak se přibližovat k obecné pravdě a jak přesně k ní jednotlivci dospívají. První část vysvětluje, co je to empirická věda a jaké jsou její určující rysy, zatímco druhá část dokládá, jak Bratrstvo čistoty nahlíželo na rozličná užití kvadrivia jako na metody vedoucí k poznání. Závěrečná část hodnotí některé příklady, které lze nalézt v samotných základech kvadriviálních disciplín a demonstruje na nich, jak je v nich využita formální logika.
The paper sketches and defends two instances of the strategy Let N’s be whatever they have to be to explain our knowledge of them—one in which N’s are natural numbers and one in which N’s are propositions. The former, which makes heavy use of Hume’s principle and plural quantification, grounds our initial knowledge of number in (a) our identification of objects as falling under various types, (b) our ability to count (i.e. to pair memorized numerals with individuated objects of one’s attention), (c) our (initially perceptual) recognition of plural properties (e.g. being three in number), and (d) our predication of those properties of pluralities that possess them (even though no individuals in the pluralities do). Given this foundation, one can use Fregean techniques to non-paradoxically generate more extensive arithmetical knowledge. The second instance of my metaphysics-in-the-service-of-epistemology identifies propositions (i.e. semantic contents of some sentences, objects of the attitudes, and bearers of truth, falsity, necessity, contingency, and apriority) with certain kinds of purely representational cognitive acts, operations, or states. In addition to providing natural solutions to traditionally un-addressed epistemic problems involving linguistic cognition and language use, I argue that this metaphysical conception of propositions expands the solution spaces of many of the most recalcitrant and long-standing problems in natural-language semantics and the philosophy of language.
The author traces the road Dewey covered when he tried to free himself from a traditional ontology and epistemology. He did completely change understanding of the concept of experience. In the second part, author shows what it is meant to be ''true''/''false'' in the pragmatist logic and epistemology. It is indicated by explication of Dewey’s up-to-date conception of perception and knowledge. The role of action is stressed there. In the third part, author explains why our traditional approach to thinking could not accept this pragmatist understanding. He introduces there Dewey’s analysis of the old Greek idea of knowledge as seeing finalities of the ''true world''. In the semi-final part, the author articulates Dewey’s conception of ''ecological paradigm'' that could be seen as final liberation from the old, powerful, yet false tradition of the separate objects ontology. There the conception of situational ontology is presented. In the last part, he summarizes a new understanding of knowledge, truth and situational ontology and thus determines a new meaning of experience. Experience there is understood as a not-subjective field of powers that cross back and forth borders of objects in a process of achieving equilibrium., Autor sleduje cestu, kterou Dewey zakryl, když se snažil osvobodit od tradiční ontologie a epistemologie. Úplně změnil chápání pojmu zkušenosti. Ve druhé části autor ukazuje, co má být v pragmatické logice a epistemologii ,,pravdivé'' / ,,falešné''. To je naznačeno vysvětlením Deweyho aktuálního pojetí vnímání a poznání. Je zde zdůrazňována úloha akce. Ve třetí části autor vysvětluje, proč náš tradiční přístup k myšlení nemohl přijmout toto pragmatické chápání. Uvádí zde Deweyho analýzu staré řecké představy o poznání jako vidění finality „pravého světa“. V polovině závěrečné části autor vyjadřuje Deweyho pojetí ,,ekologického paradigmatu'', které lze považovat za konečné osvobození od starého, mocného, ale falešná tradice jednotlivých objektů ontologie.
