Článek upozorňuje na metodologickou neúnosnost vytváření archeologických konstrukcí, které jsou závislé na takovýchto domněnkách. and The Roman military campaign against Maroboduus in the year 6 AD is the earliest accurately dated historical event linked to the Bohemian Basin. On the occasion of its 2000th anniversary, the author considers the methodological problems attendant upon research into the early Roman period in Bohemia. Taking examples from the chronology of archaeological horizons, the migrations of ethnic units, Roman imports and the Roman campaign of 6 AD itself, the article demonstrates the fact that Czech archaeology has traditionally prioritised written over archaeological sources. Much if the data on which researchers rely, however, cannot be proven in the written record: often, they are merely the conjectures and interpretations of historians. This article highlights the methodological unjustifiability of creating archaeological constructs that are dependent on such conjectures.
Nálezy jsou pojednány nejen z důvodů bilance archeologických pramenů, ale také se zřetelem k otázce specializace a organizace výroby v raných státech sledované části Evropy. and The text summarizes archaeological sources for the study of pottery production in the territory of the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland in the early medieval period. The text focuses on finds from pottery workshops, including pottery kilns, collected in a separate catalogue at the end of the work, as well as on selected evidence on the subject of the distribution of ceramics. Finds are discussed not only for reasons of reviewing archaeological sources, but also with regard to the question of the specialization and organization of production in the early states in the studied parts of Europe.
Polemicky zaměřená stať na základě nepočetných písemných a početnějších archeologických pramenů spojuje šíření kultury s keramikou pražského typu s přesunem gentes, později nazývaných především Venedi a Sklavini, do střední Evropy. Nálezy z území Slovanů (Avarů, Gepidů, Bavorů ad.) neprezentují symbolicky vyjadřovanou „identitu“; archeolog provádí vždy unikátní interpretaci komplexu hmotných a písemných pramenů; v soustavném interpretačním kruhu se vytváří horizont smyslu, v němž lze rozpoznávat a vydělovat fakta. and This polemically written text, based on scanty data from written sources and on more abundant archaeological evidence, links the propagation of Prague-type pottery culture (henceforth PTPC) with the advance of the gentes, referred to later especially as Venedi and Sclavini, into central Europe. Our sources point to their continuity with later early medieval settlement from the times when written sources attest to the presence of Slavs, in particular Bohemani or Czechs, on Bohemian territory. On the other hand, a discontinuity with the preceding settlement of the later stage of the Migration period, traditionally ascribed to Germanic population groups, may be observed. Finds from the territory of the Slavs (Avars, Gepids, Bavarians, etc.) do not represent a symbolically expressed „identity“. Archaeology always carries out a case-by-case interpretation of the complex of material and written sources; a „horizon of sense“, in which facts may be discerned and singled out, thus emerges in a systematic interpretational circle.
Především je to zaujímání regionů se znalostí krajiny, gracilnost prvotní architektury, nedostatečná znalost výroby keramiky na samém počátku, nebo přežívání symbolických forem v keramické plastice. and A concise summary of views on the Neolithisation of Europe and the appearance of the Linear Pottery culture, and of how they have changed over the last decade. The relationship of the earliest European Neolithic with earlier settlement is not securely evident in the archaeological record, but may be identified in a range of indices, above all the occupation of the region with a knowledge of the landscape, the grace of the first architecture, the insufficient knowledge of pottery production at the very beginning and the survival of symbolic forms in ceramic sculpture.
Článek je příspěvkem do diskuse, zda v době laténské existoval rozvinutý obchod, kdo jej ovládal, jaký měl význam v tehdejším hospodářství. Není proto nutné pochybovat o tom, že podobně tomu bylo i v Galii, kde je některými historiky existence keltského obchodu zpochybňována. and This article is a contribution to the discussion of whether highly developed trade existed in the La Tène, who controlled it, and how significant it was for the economies of the time. After a definition of terms (‘trade’ is here understood to mean any peaceful exchange of goods), the question is considered for the lands of Central Europe. In this region, developed trade can be observed as early as during the Neolithic; trade in the La Tène period was entirely related to the ancient local traditions of such activity. Any trading activity between Bohemia and the neighbouring regions had to cope with the unsettled territory of the border mountains, and can thus be regarded as comprising long distance trade contacts. Using the examples of the distribution of salt and quernstones, the article demonstrates that trade played an exceptionally important economic and social role in the La Tène. In Central Europe trade was exclusively in the hands of the local population, most likely Celts; there is thus no need to doubt that the situation in Gaul was similar, where some historians have cast doubt on the existence of Celtic trade.
Cílem práce je diskutovat význam her v předliterárních společnostech. Faktografický základ textu tvoří formální a metrické srovnání rondelů několika archeologických kultur studovaného období. Interpretační rámec doplňují etnohistorické informace z oblasti Mezoameriky o významu institucionalizované míčové hry pro fungování tamní stratifikované společnosti. and The aim of this contribution is to discuss the significance of games in preliterate societies. To date, not much attention has been paid to this social activity, primarily concerning the period of European prehistory. This article is based on a hypothetical interpretation of rondels as an enclosed area for playing games. The introductory theoretical passage refers to the importance of the phenomenon of games in terms of their social function. The factual basis of the text comprises a formal and metric comparison of rondels of several archaeological cultures in the studied period. The interpretational framework is supplemented by ethnohistorical information, from Mesoamerica, on the significance of an institutionalised ball game for the functioning of the stratified society there.
