The 700th birth anniversary of King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV has been designated as one of UNESCO´s important world anniversaries for 2016-2017. The Czech Academy of Sciences recreates the period of Charles IV at the exhibiton entitled Seven Towers. Charles IV through the eyes of academics (1316-2016) at the Science and Art Gallery. The visitors have an oppportunity to see the unique gold ducats with a picture of Charles IV. For this first time the most valuable archaeological discoveries of glass goblets are exhibited. Everyday items used by residents of the medieval city are also on display. The exhibition also shows a rare treasure of coins, which was hidden in the Emmaus monastery about 1370, as well as copies of the Constitutive Act of the Charles University, Charles´s Code Maiestas Carolina or late-medieval transcript of Charles´ Golden Bull. Personality of Charles IV is documented by commemorative coins, medals and seals bearing his image. Part of the exhibition is also a faithful copy of the statue of Charles IV from the Old Town Bridge Tower, the last sculptural portrait of the monarch before his death. and Marina Hužvárová.

Pompeho nemoc (glykogenóza typ 2, deficit alfa glukosidázy) je autozomálně recesivní dědičné metabolické onemocnění, jehož podkladem je defekt lysozomální kyselé alfa glukosidázy vedoucí k hromadění-střádání lysozomálního glykogenu v buňkách a tkáních s následnou dysfunkcí především ve svalové tkáni srdce a kosterních svalech. Průběh je velmi variabilní: od těžkého rychle progredujícího postižení novorozenců (klasická infantilní forma) po postupné postižení s manifestací v dětství či pozdní dospělosti. Je-li alfa glukosidáza zcela nebo téměř nefunkční, vzniká tzv. klasická infantilní forma choroby. Potíže se rozvíjí v prvních měsících života a mají charakter neprospívání, svalové slabosti a potíží s dýcháním. Dochází k výraznému zvětšení srdce, většina dětí se před zavedením substituční terapie nedožila prvních narozenin. Je-li enzym štěpící glykogen alespoň částečně funkční, vzniká tzv. pozdní (juvenilní či adultní) forma onemocnění. Tato situace nastává, pokud vznikne závažná mutace jedné alely a lehčí na druhé. To vede k méně progresivnímu fenotypu. Rozpětí manifestace nemoci je u této formy od první do šesté věkové dekády. Hlavním projevem je svalová slabost, která postupuje a významně zasahuje dýchací svalstvo. U těchto nemocných nebývá srdce zvětšeno. Při podezření na PN máme tři diagnostické úrovně. První je skríningové vyšetření pomocí testu suché kapky (DBS, Dried Blood Spot). Potvrzení diagnózy se provádí vyšetřením aktivity GAA v leukocytech. DNA vyšetření je důležité pro stanovení korelace genotyp-fenotyp a detekci přenašečů v rodině., Pompe disease (glycogen storage disease type 2, acid maltase deficiency) is inherited autosomal recessive metabolic disorder caused by deficiency of acid alpha-glucosidase and resulting in lysosomal glycogen storage in various tissues, mainly heart and skeletal muscle. Continuous spectrum of phenotypes from the rapidly progressive infantile form to the slowly progressive late onset form of the disease can be observed. Classical infantile form of the disease manifests soon after birth due to absent or nearly absent activity of the key enzyme. Typical manifestations include failure to thrive, muscle weakness, cardiomegaly, and respiratory failure. Before the era of substitution therapy, the majority of children died within the first year of life. Partial enzyme deficiency (severe mutation on one allele and milder on the second) leads to the less severe phenotype with manifestation in child- or adulthood. Time span is from the first to the sixth decade of life. Leading symptoms include slowly progressing limb girdle and trunk muscle weakness with significant involvement of respiratory muscles. There is no cardiomegaly. Suspicion of Pompe disease is confirmed in three steps. The first involves screening with the Dried Blood Spot test. Testing of the activity of alfa glucosidase in leukocytes is used to confirm the disease. Mutation analysis is important to assess the correlation between genotype and phenotype and to identify familial carriers. Autoimunitní encefalitidy jsou akutní či subakutní monofázická nebo progresivní zánětlivá onemocnění CNS podmíněná autoimunitními mechanizmy (působením patogenních autoprotilátek nebo autoagresivních efektorových buněk). Mezi autoimunitní encefalitidy lze řadit klasické paraneoplastické syndromy s postižením CNS, limbické encefalitidy, anti‑NMDAR encefalitidu, Morvanův syndrom, Rasmussenovu encefalitidu, onemocnění z okruhu Stiff‑Person Syndromu včetně progresivní encefalomyelitidy s rigiditou a myoklonem, akutní autoimunitně podmíněné extrapyramidové poruchy hybnosti, encephalitis lethargica, neurologické syndromy se zvýšenou senzitivitou vůči glutenu a další. V posledních letech prodělala tato oblast neuroimunologie prudký rozvoj. Byly popsány nové syndromy, upřesněny klinické projevy a etiopatogenetické mechanizmy ně­kte­rých již známých chorob a identifikována řada nových typů protilátek. Tato minimonografie si klade za cíl podat ucelený přehled současných znalostí v oblasti autoimunitních encefalitid a umožnit tak klinikům snazší orientaci v této oblasti neurologie., Autoimmune encephalitis is a term used to describe a group of acute or subacute monophasic or progressive inflammatory CNS disorders with autoimmune pathogenesis (i.e. induced by pathogenic autoantibodies or autoreactive effector cells). This group includes such diverse conditions as paraneoplastic CNS syndromes, limbic encephalitis, anti-NMDAR encephalitis, Morvan’s syndrome, Rasmussen encephalitis, stiff-person syndrome spectrum disorders including progressive encephalomyelitis with rigidity and myoclonus, autoimmune movement disorders, encephalitis lethargica, neurological syndromes with increased sensitivity to gluten, etc. This area of neuroimmunology has evolved dynamically during the past 10 years. Many new syndromes have been described, understanding of pathogenesis of the already known syndromes has improved and new antibodies were identified. This review aims to provide an overview of current knowledge in the field of autoimmune encephalitis in order to help clinicians navigate the rough waters of this exciting area of neurology. Tyto studie zřetelně svědčí o n ápadném kontrastu mezi agresivním šimpanzem a mír umilovným bo - nobem. Náš vlastní druh nadto sdílí některé psychologické a s ociální aspekty s o běma zmíněnými pongidy. Antropologové tedy dnes mohou s jistotou zasadit všechny tři druhy do evolučního rámce., Anthropologists recognize both the close similarities and distinct differences between the human species and the great apes, especially the chimpanzee and the bonobo. Besides acknowledging the obvious biological characteristics, primatologists needed to also inves - tigate the psychological and social similarities between the human animal and the two Pan species. Jane Goodall pioneered the close-range and long-term observations of wild chimpanzees in their natural habitats. Likewise, Harold Coolidge and Frans de Waal contributed to un - derstanding and appreciating bonobos as a r esult of their ground-breaking research. These studies clearly attest to a s triking contrast between the aggressive chimpanzee and the peaceful bonobo. Furthermore, our own species shares some psychological and social aspects with both of these pongids. More than half of all of the children in the world, which die before the age of five, die in Africa. Wider availability of several highly effecti - ve interventions such as oral rehyd - ration therapy in cases of diarrhoea could prevent large proportion of these child deaths. Unfortunately these interventions are usually not available in African countries. Ho - wever both availability of different life-saving health interventions and child mortality varies a lot across African countries. The purpose of this article is to explore what are determinants of child mortality and availability of these interventions in Africa.
