Takový závěr vede v konečném důsledku k tomu, že Berlinovo a Constantovo dělení nelze vnímat jako homogenní., Berlin’s dichotomy of positive and negative freedom is, in academic quarters, such a well-discussed problem that any kind of attempt at a fresh interpretation confronts the real risk of developing what has already been said and, in that way, of losing argumentational strength. The aim of this article does not, however, consist in contributing to the debate about the viability of Berlin’s distinction, but in calling into question the stereotypical reception of the intellectual sources that Berlin was inspired by. In the framework of the line of traditions of liberal thinking, which, among others, Berlin himself identifies, is his distinction between two concepts of freedom, usually identified with the principles and intellectual meaning of the classification by the French enlightenment thinker Benjamin Constant. The mixing up of Berlin’s polarity positive–negative with Constant’s scheme of ancient–modern is probably a consequence of the numerous common points in the two conceptions. These, however, lead to the automatic perception of agreement even in those principles for which the level of coherence is questionable. The main aim of this study is, therefore, to indicate, firstly, the proven fact that for a consistent comparison of Berlin’s and Constant’s dichotomy one must examine, in addition to the commonly analysed relationship of negative freedom with modern freedom, the connectedness of the opposite poles in the two cases. Secondly, and more importantly, the thesis is advanced that, in its fundamental properties, Constant’s thinking goes beyond the liberal tradition and points towards Pettit’s republican principles of freedom as non-dominance. This conclusion ultimately leads to the recognition that Berlin’s and Constant’s division cannot be seen as homogenous., Jan Květina., and Obsahuje seznam literatury
The author formulates the hypothesis that the key value which guides the reflections of John Stuart Mill about society is not freedom, as is traditionally assumed in connection with the liberal conception, but knowledge. The realisation of a free society is then shown to be one of the possible ways of achieving this value. On the basis of
Rawls’ and Berlin’s interpretations of Mill, the author shows that Mill’s idea of a free society rests on a certain ground of value which is constituted by Mill’s conviction about the importance of knowledge. There follows a discussion of the aspects of Mill’s conception of society in which the problematic of knowledge seems to be more or less evident. The evidence is then bolstered by attention to an analysis of Mill’s thinking undertaken by John Skorupski and David Brink. The author also indicates that emphasising the connection between the value of knowledge and liberty in society may provide us with new perspectives when we seek an answer to the question of how, in practice, we can create a free society.
This contribution deals with identity as it is specifically defined by Taylor as a dialogical entity, and with the inadequate conditions that are provided in liberal societies for its formation, and of the indispensable presence of significant others in this process. The second part is devoted to the analysis of a the characteristic features of liberal societies. In the third part the author turns to the disharmonies between the demands on the creation of identity and the conditions provided by liberal areas. Demonstrations are provided at the universal level as well as at the level of concrete problems - individualism, moral relativism, the dominance of instrumental reason, the lack of respect. In conclusion the author summarises her findings and confirms the stated hypothesis on the contemporary conditions of liberal societies which hinders the formation of the modern identity of man., Bojana Ladrová., and Obsahuje poznámky a bibliografii
a1_Cíle. Cílem práce je zjištění determinant etnických stereotypů. Pozornost je věnována zejména stereotypům Romů a Vietnamců v českém prostředí. Soubor a podmínky. Prvního výzkumu se zúčastnil soubor 198 studentů a studentek ze tří různých pražských humanitně orientovaných vysokých škol. Druhého výzkumu se zúčastnil soubor 46 studentů a studentek ze dvou humanitně orientovaných pražských vysokých škol. K měření explicitních etnických stereotypů a postojů autoři použili otevřený dotazník, k měření implicitních postojů afektivní priming. The goal of the study is to find the determinants of ethnic stereotypes. The attention is paid namely to the stereotypes of Roma and Vietnamese in the Czech environment. Sample and conditions. 198 students of humanities from three Prague universities took part in the first study. 46 students of humanities from two Prague universities took part in the second study. For measuring the explicit ethnic stereotypes and attitudes the open questionnaire was used, for measuring the implicit attitudes the affective priming was used. Except of that in the second study the scale of traditional and modern racism and the scale of protestant and humanistic egalitarian values were used. Hypotheses. Two main hypotheses were tested in the first study. According to the first one the key dimension of attributes of ethnic stereotypes is the dimension reflecting values of protestant work ethics (diligence, frugality, austerity). In accordance with it (the second hypothesis) the evaluation of particular ethnic categories (including the one´s own) depends on the position on this dimension. In the second study, next two hypotheses were tested. According to the first one the conservative people attribute to Roma the more negative attributes the more negative implicit attitudes to them they have. According to the second hypothesis the liberal people attribute to Roma the attributes with valence that is incongruent with their implicit attitudes., b2_Statistical analysis. In the first study, the data were analyzed by the means of correspondence and factor analyses. In the second study, the data were first psychometrically analyzed and then analyzed in the series of correlation and regression analyses. Results. The results of statistical analyses are relatively well fitting the hypotheses. Limits. The students of humanities who can be more achievement oriented and can have partly different stereotypes and attitudes to Roma and vietnamese than other subpopulations were taking part in the studies. The question to which subpopulations the findings can be generalized remains thus open., Karel Hnilica, Lia Radová., and Obsahuje seznam literatury
V poslední části textu vyjadřuje naději, že se četba Zrcadla stane inspirací k četbě dalších – méně módních, ale přesto stejně ostrakizovaných – děl a autorů., This article is a review study of Rorty’s book Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature, which was recently translated into Czech. In the first part, the reviewer compares the Slovak and Czech translations and draws attention to the qualities of the Czech. In the second part, the main structural points in Rorty’s argument are described – from the genealogical stress on the arbitrariness of modern conceptions of representation and the explanation of the reasons for the primacy of epistemology above ontology, to the critical deconstruction of this thought and to Rorty’s proposal of a new conception and new function of philosophy. In the following part, by the way of a response to T. Marvan, an inconsistency in Rorty’s work is drawn attention to – that is its continuing attachment to the modern tradition of thinking, something which detracts from the consistency of his anti-representationalism. In the final part of the article, a hope is expressed that the reading of the Mirror will be an inspiration for further reading of less fashionable, but rather ostracised, works and authors., and Radim Šíp.
Nacistická morálka je toho „dobrým“ příkladem. and Viktor Knapp’s book Problém nacistické právní filozofie (first edition 1947) is an important contribution to the understanding of the nature of national socialist (= NS) jurisprudence. Knapp rightly claims that the fundamental principle of NS-legal theory is the thesis of the necessary connection
between law and morality. Law and morality set up unity, therefore moral obligations can be enforced by means of law. This fact alone is a dangerous anti-liberal idea.Ultimately, this is how the nazi regime can impose its own conception of the good life on its citizens. Much worse, Nazis abused morality for justification of grossly immoral practices, including the extermination of other nations.Morality can be immoral as well. Nazi morality is a “good” example.
