Cílem práce je interpretace struktury a prostorového rozložení nekeramické složky odpadu, který se dochoval v archeologických nálezech neolitického sídliště v Bylanech u Kutné Hory. V rámci problému se soustředíme na tři roviny otázek. První se bude týkat zacházení s odpadem a jeho deponování v okolí domů, druhá rozložení nekeramického odpadu na sídlišti a třetí kvantity a struktury nekeramického odpadu z hlediska dlouhého trvání sídliště. Sledovanými kategoriemi nekeramického odpadu byly: štípaná industrie, broušená industrie, brousky, kameny a zrnotěrky (mlýny). Užitá metoda spočívala v prostorové analýze kvantitativního výskytu těchto druhů nálezů vzhledem k jejich pozici v rámci stavebních komplexů domů (usedlostí), prozkoumaných ploch i délce trvání osídlení. Doložit trend v deponování nekeramických artefaktů uvnitř usedlostí se nepodařilo; byl však prokázán excentrický rozptyl artefaktů vzhledem k pomyslnému středu osídlených ploch jednotlivých časoprostorových úseků. Na počtu domů a délce trvání osídlení je závislý počet artefaktů s výjimkou štípané industrie. Analýza průměrného počtu nekeramických nálezů vztažených na počet domů příslušného chronologického intervalu poukázala na možnost, že opuštěné usedlosti byly na sídlišti dále využívány, např. právě pro deponování odpadu. and This paper aims to provide an interpretation of the structure and spatial patterning of the non-pottery refuse preserved at the Neolithic site of Bylany. The problem is considered at three levels, tackling the questions of refuse management and deposition in the vicinity of houses (households), the spatial distribution of refuse within the settlement area as a whole, and the quantity and structure of non-pottery refuse from a long-term settlement perspective. The entire assemblage of non-pottery finds is divided into five categories: chipped stone industry, polished stone industry, grindstones, millstones and stones without use-wear traces. The method applied is based on GIS and multivariate statistics. The spatial distribution and quantity of refuse are analysed with respect to space (in terms of proximity to Neolithic houses and the whole of the excavated settled area) and time (the duration of settlement in six chronological intervals). No deliberate pattern of refuse management was identified in the vicinity of the houses, but the refuse was found to have a tendency towards eccentric grouping within the settled area as a whole. Refuse quantity is dependent on the number of houses and settlement duration. The negative correlation between the mean density of non-pottery artefacts per house and the number of houses in corresponding chronological intervals may be explained by the interpretation that refuse was commonly deposited within the areas of abandoned houses. These results correspond to ethnoarchaeological observations.
Antrakologická analýza provedená na reprezentativním souboru uhlíků získaném systematickým plavením výplní zahloubených objektů na sídlišti kultury s vypíchanou keramikou v Kolíně poskytla poněkud netypické spektrum dřevin mladšího neolitu. Místo očekávaného souboru stanovištně náročných listnáčů a dubu se v lokalitě vyskytoval soubor dubu s významným podílem borovice a příměsí nenáročných listnatých dřevin (bříza, líska, jabloňovité) typických pro společenstva acidofilních doubrav. Článek pojednává o historii, metodických možnostech, úskalích a výhodách rekonstrukce lesní vegetace pomocí antrakologické analýzy (analýzy uhlíků) z archeologických lokalit. Podává stručný souhrn antrakologických dat z neolitu České republiky. Zdůrazňuje význam metody pro tento typ rekonstrukce jako zdroje informací nezávislého na pylových datech. Na konkrétním příkladu antrakologického spektra z Kolína rekonstruuje lesní vegetaci v zázemí neolitické lokality. and The anthracological analysis conducted on a representative assemblage of charcoal acquired in the systematic wet sieving of the fill of cut features at the Stroked Pottery culture settlement in Kolín produced a rather atypical spectrum of Late Neolithic trees. Instead of the anticipated assemblage of environmentally sensitive deciduous trees and oak, the site featured oak with a prominent share of pine and a mix of undemanding deciduous trees (birch, hazel, apple) typical for acidophilic oak communities. The article addresses the history, methodological possibilities, pitfalls and advantages of the reconstruction of forest vegetation using the anthracological analysis (analysis of charcoal) of data collected from archaeological sites. The work presents a brief summary of anthracological data from the Neolithic period in the territory of the Czech Republic, emphasising the importance of the method for this type of reconstruction as a source of information independent of pollen data. Using the concrete example of the anthracological spectrum from Kolín, the article reconstructs the forest vegetation surrounding Neolithic sites.
Die vergangenen 20 Jahre intensiver archäologischer Denkmalpflege auf kommunaler Basis führten im niederbayerischen Landkreis Deggendorf zu völlig neuen Einblicken in das Bestattungswesen des Alt–, Mittel– und frühen Jungneolithikums. Die bedeutendsten Erkenntnisse konnten für die Linienbandkeramik durch die Entdeckung einer ganzen Reihe von Siedlungsbestattungen und eines Gräberfeldes gewonnen werden. Für das Mittelneolithikum gelang der erstmalige Nachweis einer Gräbergruppe, dem frühen Jungneolithikum konnten mehrere Einzelbestattungen innerhalb unterschiedlicher Siedlungsgruben hinzugefügt werden. Die in einem geografischen Ausschnitt des ostbayerischen Donauraumes erforschten Grabfunde besitzen in ihrer Gesamtheit überregionale Bedeutung. and FUNERALS OF THE 6TH AND 5TH MILLENNIUM B.C. AT LANDKREIS DEGGENDORF (LOWER BAVARIA): PERCEPTIONS OF 20 YEARS LOCAL HERITAGE MANAGEMENT. The intensive archaeological heritage management in the Landkreis Deggendorf let to new results concerning funerals in the Early, Middle and early Late Neolithic periods. The most important results were obtained for the Linearbandkeramik by the excavation of many graves in the context of settlements and of one cemetery. For the first time it was possible to excavate a group of graves, dated to the Middle Neolithic period and several single graves inside settlement pits from the Younger Neolithic period. These results are of importance not only for the eastern Bavarian region but for a wider range.
Formal and technological attributes of pottery mirror potters’ habitus, actions, and decisions inhibited or stimulated by users of pottery. The variability of these attributes in time and space reflects networks of producers embedded in a complex social network. But how the knowledge of pottery manufacturing processes can be used to gain more accurate understanding of the society behind the “chaînes opératoires” when the basis for the interpretation is archaeological evidence? Can archaeologists reach reliable picture on relations between pottery technology and society? Can the interpretations be built on testable hypotheses? Those are painful issues accompanying all the archaeological attempts to understand variability and changes in pottery technology, the issues that motivate the main theme of the thematic issue of Archeologické rozhledy: the pursuit of archaeologists to integrate pottery technology analysis to the complex interpretation of the Neolithic societies. and Formální a technologické vlastnosti keramických nádob mají potenciál odrážet habitus hrnčíře, jeho výrobní postupy a volby, které jsou omezovány nebo naopak stimulovány uživateli jeho výrobků. Různorodost těchto keramických vlastností v čase i v prostoru zrcadlí zapojení výrobců do provázané sítě v rámci celkové sociální struktury. Je však vůbec možné dobrat se, skrze analýzu výrobních procesů keramiky na základě archeologických nálezů, porozumění tomuto společenskému rámci, který se skrývá za jednotlivými operačními řetězci? Je reálné, aby archeologové dospěli k odpovídající představě vztahů mezi keramickou technologií a společností? Lze v tomto smyslu vytvářet interpretace na základě testovatelných hypotéz? To jsou palčivé otázky, které logicky doprovázejí archeologické studium variability a změn postupů keramické výroby. A jsou to také otázky, jež motivovaly téma tohoto sešitu Archeologických rozhledů: úsilí o zapojení analýz keramické technologie do komplexní interpretace neolitických společností.
La fin rapide de la Céramique Linéaire est décrite en Europe centrale, Hongrie comprise. Une attention particulière est consacrée à la corrélation entre les diverses analyses factorielles de décors céramiques, pour établir une chronologie inaccessible à la datation 14C. Contrairement à l’usage, cette chronologie est également fondée sur l’évolution de la forme de bottier haute et sur les sériations des mobiliers et rites funéraires. Cette crise finale de la Céramique Linéaire, connue par les charniers d’habitat et qui dure à peine plus d’un siècle, a en effet laissé, dans les cimetières, de multiples marques tant matérielles que sociales. Elle est à l’origine de la cohabitation et de l’affrontement des mondes ancien et nouveau et elle déclenche la colonisation de nouvelles terres. Deux siècles avant cette crise, un scénario identique a pu se dérouler à la fin de la Céramique Linéaire I. Les causes de ces événements ne sont pas encore connues. and The rapid end of the Linear Pottery culture is described in central Europe, including Hungary. Particular attention is given to the correlation of various factor analyses of pottery decoration, to establish a chronology unobtainable through 14C dating. Contrary to the usual custom, this chronology is also based on the evolution high shoe–last adze shapes as well as seriations of grave–goods and burial rites. This final Linear Pottery culture crisis, which lasts little over a century and is reflected by mass–graves in settlements, is in fact visible in both material and social evidence from cemeteries. Cohabitation and confrontation of the old and new worlds originate in this crisis, which sets off the colonisation of new land. Two centuries earlier, an identical scenario may have taken place at the end of Linear Pottery I. The causes of these events remain unknown.
Studium geografického rozptylu surovin broušené a štípané industrie v neolitu umožnilo určit hlavní trendy distribuce těchto odlišných typů surovin. Zatímco zastoupení silicitových surovin klesá na 30 % ve vzdálenosti 70–150 km od zdroje, v případě metabazitů z Jizerských hor je situace značně odlišná. Ve starším neolitu mají téměř stoprocentní zastoupení i na jižní Moravě, ve vzdálenosti 250 km od zdroje (Vedrovice). Distribuční areál suroviny je obrovský a zcela nesrovnatelný se soudobými distribučními systémy surovin pro štípanou industrii. Distribuční systém spolu s těžbou fungoval ve stejném rozsahu až do konce staršího stupně kultury s vypíchanou keramikou. V této době se dílny přemísťují do nížiny a zpracovávají méně kvalitní surovinu z teras řek. Zároveň se objevují další ve východních i středních Čechách. Vedle toho se ve velké míře začíná experimentovat s jinými surovinami, které ale již nikdy nedosáhnou takové kvality. Starý distribuční systém se zhroutil a byl nahrazen novým, který byl více regionalizovaný a v mnohém odpovídá situaci v distribuci silicitové suroviny. and A study of the geographical dispersal of the raw materials for Neolithic polished and chipped stone industries enables a determination of the main trends in the distribution of these different types of raw material. While silicite raw materials vary at around 30 % representation at distances of 70–150 km from their sources, in the case of the metabasites from the Jizerské hory [Mountains] the situation is markedly different. In the early Neolithic these latter have almost 100 % representation even in South Moravia, at a distance of 250 km from their source (Vedrovice). The distribution area of this raw material is enormous, and is entirely incomparable to the contemporaneous distribution system for raw materials used to make chipped stone industry. The distribution system, together with extraction, functioned at the same scale until the end of early phase of the Stroke-Ornamented Ware culture. At this time, the workshops moved into the lowlands and worked with less high-quality material from river terraces. At the same time, others appear in eastern and central Bohemia. In addition, there was a greater degree of experimentation with other raw materials which, however, never attained such a quality. The old distribution system collapsed and was replaced by a new one, which was more regionalised and which in many ways is reflected by the situation in the distribution of silicite raw materials.
The neolithisation of Northern Europe was neither synchronous nor uniform and it cannot be defined in simple terms. The early Neolithic populations of Northern Europe – known in the archaeological literature since the beginning of this century under the name of the TRB culture – are a consequence of a long period of contact and of mutual influences between communities with two contrasting life–styles: the Linearbandkeramik and its derivatives settled on the central European loess, and the immensely varied hunter– –gatherers roaming in the sandy and forested habitats of the North European Plain. The current significant issues, as seen through the prism of theoretical and methodological considerations, revolve around the models of transition most appropriate to circumstances in Northern Europe, the conceptual as well as real understanding of the complexity of late hunter-gatherers, the contribution of the Danubian tradition, and the dichotomy between regional diversity (a direct response to local conditions and specific requirements of individual human groups) and cultural unity (as demonstrated in the homogeneity of the process) which interlocked different cultural, economic and social phenomena into a web of dynamic relationships which lead to the emergence of such an extensive cultural complex in Northern Europe. and Neolitizace severní Evropy nebyla ani synchronní, ani jednotná, a nemůže být definována v jednoduchých termínech. Raně neolitické populace v severní Evropě – známé v archeologické literatuře od počátku tohoto století jako kultura nálevkovitých pohárů – jsou výsledkem dlouhodobých kontaktů a vzájemných vlivů mezi komunitami se dvěma odlišnými způsoby života: kulturou s lineární keramikou a jejími deriváty usídlenými ve střední Evropě a velice rozmanitými lovci–sběrači z písčitých a lesnatých severoevropských nížin. Významné otázky, viděno prizmatem teoretických a metodologických úvah, se soustřeďují kolem modelů přechodu, nejpřiměřenějšího podmínkám severní Evropy, pojmového, ale i reálného pochopení rozmanitosti pozdních lovců–sběračů, spolupůsobení dunajské tradice a dichotomie mezi regionální diverzitou (přímá odezva na lokální podmínky a specifické požadavky jednotlivých lidských skupin) a kulturní jednotou (demonstrovanou homogenitou procesu), která propojila různé kulturní, ekonomické a sociální fenomény do sítě dynamických vztahů, jež vedly k výskytu tohoto kulturního komplexu v severní Evropě.
Hinkelstein ist der Name einer mittelneolithischen, am nördlichen Oberrhein heimischen Kulturgruppe an der Wende vom 6. zum 5. Jahrtausend v. Chr., deren erste Gräber 1866 in Monsheim bei Worms, Rheinhessen, nahe einem ebenso benannten Menhir entdeckt worden waren. Zwei große Gräberfelder von Worms, Rheingewann 1895 und Rheindürkheim 1898, blieben lange Zeit repräsentativ, bis 1988/89 in Trebur, Südhessen, ein großes Gräberfeld der Hinkelsteiner und Großgartacher Kultur planmäßig ausgegraben werden konnte. Hinkelstein ist eine Nachfolgekultur der Linienbandkeramik am Ort und eine Schwesterkultur der Stichbandkeramik im Osten. Dabei wurde die bandkeramische Hockerbestattung von einer Streckbestattung mit strenger Orientierung SO–NW abgelöst und eine reiche Gefäßornamentik in linienbandkeramischer Technik und stichbandkeramischer Struktur entwickelt. and HINKELSTEIN – THE CULTURAL PICTURE OF A NEOLITHIC GROUP. Hinkelstein is a Middle Neolithic cultural group spread across the upper Rhineland, and dated to the turn of the 5th Millennium BC. The first graves of this group were uncovered in 1866 at Monsheim near Worms (Hessen Rhineland), close to the menhir of the same name. Two large cemeteries at Worms – Rheingewann (1895) and Rheindürkheim (1898) – remained representative until 1988/89, when planned excavations were able to uncover a large cemetery at Trebur (south Hessen). Evidence of the Hinkelstein and Großgartach cultural groups was recovered. Hinkelstein is a group which here follows the Linear Pottery culture and corresponds to the Stroke–Ornamented Ware culture in the east. Flexed burials are now replaced by stretched ones with a precise SO–NW orientation. Its rich ornamentation uses the technique of Linear Pottery and the structures of Stroke–Ornamented Ware.
Earliest pottery evidence in Cantabrian Spain materialises the way this new technology was adopted on the threshold of the 5th millennium cal BC. These ceramic assemblages have rarely been the object of specific study owing to their limited representativeness from both numerical and morpho-decorative points of view. This paper presents an update on the archaeological evidence, chronology and technological characteristics of the first pottery in the Cantabrian region. It summarizes recent research on this topic focused on technological analysis of some paradigmatic pottery assemblages. It focuses on the importance of the technological study of the first ceramic assemblages in the Cantabrian region (northern Spain) as a way to approach the social significance of this technological innovation. The available information supports the assertion that the appearance of ceramics in the region does not correspond to an exchange of products, but rather to a transfer of technology, and summarizes the nature of this technology and the main activities related to it. and Nejstarší známé doklady keramiky ve španělské Kantábrii dokumentují způsob převzetí nové technologie na prahu 5. století cal BC. Tyto keramické soubory byly vinou své malé reprezentativnosti jak co do kvantity, tak po morfologicko-dekorativní stránce jen výjimečně předmětem specifického studia. Článek se zaměřuje na technologické studium nejstarších lokálních keramických souborů z Kantábrie (severní Španělsko), jehož prostřednictvím lze přiblížit společenský význam této technologické inovace. Studie, které jsou o těchto artefaktech k dispozici (mineralogické – analýzy výbrusů a rentgenová difrakční analýza, a geochemické – skenování elektronovou mikroskopií s energo disperzní rentgenovou spektrometrií), umožnily určit zdrojové oblasti surovin a různé výrobní postupy používané k výrobě těchto nejstarších nádob. Ve světle dostupných informací se článek kloní k závěru, že výskyt keramiky v tomto regionu nesouvisí se směnou výrobků, ale spíše s přenosem technologie, a shrnuje podstatu této technologie a hlavní aktivity s ní spojené.
Cílem článku je nové metodické uchopení výzdoby LBK z neolitické lokality v Bylanech u Kutné Hory. Dosavadní interpretace vývoje sídliště je založena na dataci keramického materiálu a trendech vývoje nekeramických artefaktů z tzv. stavebních komplexů. Jedná se o empiricky definované chronologicko-prostorové jednotky, jejichž jádrem je dům. Výchozí otázkou je, zda se jakkoliv změní stávající model sídliště, pokud dojde k dekonstrukci stavebních komplexů. Na základě kvantitativní analýzy stylu keramické výzdoby provedené v úrovni jednotlivých archeologických objektů bylo definováno několik skupin stylu lineární výzdoby. Význam těchto skupin byl validován prostřednictvím prostorové evidence jejich výskytu. Výsledky analýzy umožňují konfrontovat stávající teoretický model neolitických sídlišť s jinou alternativou. and The aim of the article is an innovative methodological understanding of LBK pottery decoration from the site of Bylany, Central Bohemia. The existing interpretation of the settlement development is based on pottery dating and the evolution of non-ceramic artifacts from the so-called “house complexes”. These are empirically defined spatio-temporal units with the house in their centre. The initial question is whether the existing model of the settlement will change in any way if these complexes are deconstructed. Several groups of linear decoration style were defined through quantitative analysis of pottery decoration style performed at the level of individual archaeological features. The meaning of these groups was validated through analysis of their spatial occurrence. The results of the analysis allowed comparison of the existing theoretical model of Neolithic settlements with an alternative.
