Práce se zabývá rondelem z lokality Vchynice (severozáp. Čechy), který je datovaný do mladšího neolitu. Cílem je prozkoumat vztah mezi nálezy ve výplni příkopu, dobou jeho zaplňování, funkcí a původní podobou mladoneolitických kruhových areálů. Byla provedena kvalitativní, kvantitativní a prostorová analýza nálezů z výplně příkopu rondelu. Sledovány byly zejména ty vlastnosti různých kategorií nálezů, které by mohly postihnout významné tendence spojené s formativními procesy. Výsledky jednotlivých analýz byly srovnány s jinými soubory z období neolitu. Na základě sumarizace dílčích výsledků byla pak formulována interpretace vzniku výplně příkopu. Pouze malý zlomek nálezů lze spojit s obdobím funkce rondelu. Výplň příkopu obsahovala některé nálezy, které dovolují diskutovat původní podobu objektu, nicméně samotnou funkci rondelu nelze z nálezů dešifrovat. Aplikovaný metodologický postup lze využít také na jiných objektech, které byly v minulosti zkoumány po tzv. mechanických vrstvách. and The text deals with the rondel (circle enclosure, Kreisgrabenanlage) from the Vchynice site, distr. Litoměřice (Northern Bohemia), dated to Late Neolithic. The aim is to study the relationship between the finds from the ditch infill, the duration of infilling, and the purpose and original form of Late Neolithic rondels. Qualitative, quantitative and spatial analysis of the finds from the rondel ditch was accomplished. Parameters of the different find categories that could reflect important tendencies related to formative processes were studied. The results of the particular analyses were compared with other Neolithic assemblages. On the basis of summarization of the intermediate results, interpretation hypothesis of the ditch infill formation was formulated. Only small part of the finds can be connected with the time when the rondel was in use. The ditch infill contained some finds that allow discussion of the original form of the feature, but the rondel’s function as such cannot be deduced from the finds. The methodological procedure applied may be used for other features that were excavated in the so-called mechanical (artificial) layers in the past.
Formal and technological attributes of pottery mirror potters’ habitus, actions, and decisions inhibited or stimulated by users of pottery. The variability of these attributes in time and space reflects networks of producers embedded in a complex social network. But how the knowledge of pottery manufacturing processes can be used to gain more accurate understanding of the society behind the “chaînes opératoires” when the basis for the interpretation is archaeological evidence? Can archaeologists reach reliable picture on relations between pottery technology and society? Can the interpretations be built on testable hypotheses? Those are painful issues accompanying all the archaeological attempts to understand variability and changes in pottery technology, the issues that motivate the main theme of the thematic issue of Archeologické rozhledy: the pursuit of archaeologists to integrate pottery technology analysis to the complex interpretation of the Neolithic societies. and Formální a technologické vlastnosti keramických nádob mají potenciál odrážet habitus hrnčíře, jeho výrobní postupy a volby, které jsou omezovány nebo naopak stimulovány uživateli jeho výrobků. Různorodost těchto keramických vlastností v čase i v prostoru zrcadlí zapojení výrobců do provázané sítě v rámci celkové sociální struktury. Je však vůbec možné dobrat se, skrze analýzu výrobních procesů keramiky na základě archeologických nálezů, porozumění tomuto společenskému rámci, který se skrývá za jednotlivými operačními řetězci? Je reálné, aby archeologové dospěli k odpovídající představě vztahů mezi keramickou technologií a společností? Lze v tomto smyslu vytvářet interpretace na základě testovatelných hypotéz? To jsou palčivé otázky, které logicky doprovázejí archeologické studium variability a změn postupů keramické výroby. A jsou to také otázky, jež motivovaly téma tohoto sešitu Archeologických rozhledů: úsilí o zapojení analýz keramické technologie do komplexní interpretace neolitických společností.
The paper follows on from a joint research project on the ceramics from the late LBK settlement of Cuiry-lès-Chaudardes, Picardy region, north-eastern France. In the course of this project, studies on raw materials, manufacturing sequences and decoration techniques have revealed a wide variety of technical practices throughout the occupation of the site. Most recently, analysis of variations in raw materials and tempers in relation to manufacturing sequences revealed that production was mostly carried out at house level, with the producers in each house implementing their own clay recipe and pot-forming method. Here we extend this research by comparing data on pot-forming and decoration at Cuiry-lès-Chaudardes. In this new study, no obvious relationships could be observed between pottery manufacturing sequences and decoration. However, comparison of the various house assemblages indicates a possible link between atypical decoration (i.e. non-local LBK styles) and exogenous pot-forming methods. Although requiring validation on a larger sample of ceramic assemblages from other sites, these preliminary observations provide some new insights into the complex dynamics at play in LBK settlements. and Článek vychází ze společného výzkumného projektu zaměřeného na keramický soubor ze sídliště LBK Cuirylès-Chaudardes (Pikardie, severovýchodní Francie). V rámci tohoto projektu byly studovány různé kroky výroby keramiky na úrovni domácnosti: komplexní průzkum surovin, výrobních postupů a výzdobných technik odhalil vysokou variabilitu technických praktik v průběhu osídlení lokality. Nedávno jsme analyzovali také rozdíly v použitých surovinách a ostřivech v závislosti na výrobních postupech. Tato první křížová analýza odhalila, že výroba se odehrávala převážně na úrovni domácnosti, tj. že hrnčíři v jednotlivých domech používali své vlastní složení keramického těsta a techniku stavby nádoby. Výzkum jsme rozšířili srovnáním postupů výroby keramiky s odchylkami ve výzdobě. Na základě syntézy výsledků různých studií, které naše výzkumná skupina uskutečnila dříve, předkládáme předběžnou analýzu propojující údaje o výzdobě a stavbě nádoby. Tento výzkum ukazuje možnou souvislost mezi atypickou výzdobou (např. exogenní nebo nestandardní LBK výzdoba) a způsoby tváření nádob, které byly označeny jako patrně exogenní. Tyto postřehy, které je teprve nutno statisticky ověřit na větším množství keramických souborů, poskytují nový vhled do složité sídelní dynamiky zemědělců LBK.
The British Neolithic transition, occurring around 4000 BC, at least one millennium after the continental part of Northwest Europe, is still subject to important debate these days. Various studies suggest that the Neolithic start involved farming immigrants from various parts of the Continent. However, ceramics of the Early Neolithic of Britain became increasingly distinct from their Continental roots, particularly in the Southwest and Southeast of England. We recently completed two important projects, one on Early Neolithic British and Irish pottery and the other on Peterborough Ware, integrating a new way of considering these early productions through a technological approach and the observation of various steps of the chaîne opératoire. This paper is the opportunity to present preliminary results which shed a new light on the evolution of pottery wares during the fourth millennium BC in Southern Britain. It specifically highlights strong connections between Early Neolithic and Middle Neolithic pottery, in terms of style, but above in terms of manufacturing techniques. and Přechod k neolitu v Británii, který se odehrál kolem 4000 BC, nejméně o jedno tisíciletí později než v kontinentální části severozápadní Evropy, je v současnosti stále předmětem diskusí. Různé studie připouštějí myšlenku, že začátek neolitu byl spojený se zemědělci – imigranty z různých částí kontinentální Evropy. Keramika britského časného neolitu se nicméně s časem stále více odlišovala od svých kontinentálních kořenů, a to zejména na jihozápadě a jihovýchodě Anglie. V nedávné době se podařilo realizovat dva projekty, jeden zaměřený na časně neolitickou britskou a irskou keramiku, druhý zacílený na keramickou tradici Peterborough. Technologickým přístupem a studiem jednotlivých kroků (chaîne opératoire) oba projekty přispěly k novému pohledu na tyto časné tradice. Tento článek prezentuje předběžné výsledky, které vrhají nové světlo na vývoj keramických tradicí v průběhu 4. tisíciletí BC v jižní Británii. Zdůrazňuje souvislost mezi časně neolitickou a středoneolitickou keramikou co do stylu a hlavně výrobních technik.
Autor nastiňuje ideologický systém starých Slovanů, který byl základem územních jednotek (žup), skýtajících lidem jejich identitu. Dále popisuje rozvinutý systém přípravy pokrmů, jenž se objevil v 7.–8. stol. na Balkáně jako nový fenomén, odlišující se od systému starousedlíků. Stále ještě neexistuje lepší vysvětlení než závěr, že lidé, kteří tyto odlišné postupy užívali, sami sebe nazývali Slovany. and The author presents the ideological system of the Old Slavs, which was used as the basis for comprehensive territorial units (župe), which gave the people their identity. The complex cooking system is also described. This appeared in the Balkans in the 7th and 8th centuries as a new system that was quite different from the previous system. There is still no better explanation for its appearance than that it was established by the people who named themselves Slavs.
Článek zkoumá předpoklady hypotézy, podle níž několik keramických fragmentů ze středočeských oppid imituje tvary středomořské keramiky. Dosud aktuální názor na problematiku je shledán sporným z důvodu chronologických či formálních nesrovnalostí a je poukázáno na meze úvah o formální imitaci. Namísto nich je u většiny fragmentů středomořský vliv shledáván nanejvýš ve funkční inspiraci. V případě jednoho fragmentu by o imitaci bylo možno uvažovat jen v případě jeho datace do raně laténského období. and The article reconsiders the premises of a hypothesis according to which several pottery sherds found in the late La Tène oppida in central Bohemia imitate Mediterranean ceramic forms. The idea of the formal imitation of concrete vase types is questioned on the grounds of chronological and formal inconsistencies. Instead of a problematic theory of formal imitation, functional inspiration is proposed as a more appropriate mechanism to explain the reception of the Mediterranean influence. In one case, only change of the object’s chronology (to the early La Tène period) could help it maintain its status of an imitation.
Na parcele v sev. části Nového Města pražského byly dokumentovány relikty částečně zahloubeného, kůlovou konstrukcí neseného domu z pokročilého 12. či z poč. 13. století. Dnes jde již o jeden z mnoha takových dokladů intenzivního osídlení této části tehdejší pražské aglomerace. Výjimečná je možnost datování objektu díky nádobě s obětinou vsazené do jeho podlahy. Zánik budovy autoři kladou do kontextu událostí, které tento prostor v okolí kostela sv. Klimenta postihly ve 30. letech 13. stol. v souvislosti s panovnickým záměrem založit (první) Město pražské. Chronologicky následný doklad využití pozemku představuje odpadní jímka, jejíž obsah aktualizuje zprávy o utváření zdejšího předměstí z 1. pol. 14. století. Zlomky skleněných nádob z jímky svědčí o úrovni stolování ekonomicky nikoli nadprůměrné pražské domácnosti i o sortimentu dutého skla na pražském trhu ve 14. století. and On a lot in the northern part of the New Town in Prague, the remains of a partly sunken building from the 12th century, or the start of the 13th century, were excavated. The ever increasing numbers of finds of such features are evidence of the intensity of settlement in this part of the early medieval Prague agglomeration, only in this case dating is possible on the basis of a vessel, containing offerings, set in the floor. The authors situate the demise of the building within the context of events that affected this area in the 1230s, in connection with the sovereign’s plan to establish the (first) Town of Prague. Another unearthed feature was a cesspit: its content corresponds with contemporary reports about sudden formation of these outskirts during the first half of the 14th century. Fragments of glass vessels from this cesspit testify to the standard of dining in the household, which for Prague standards was not above average, and to the variety of blown glass in the Prague market in the 14th century.
Přehled poznatků o raně středověkém osídlení dvou ostrožných hradišť na říčce Vrchlici jižně od Kutné Hory. Prvním z nich je Cimburk, polykulturní výšinné sídliště osazené již od eneolitu, kde sondáž na předhradí v l. 1989–1990 zachytila též sídlištní objekty a fortifikaci (příkop s valem), datované keramikou od starší až do počátku mladší doby hradištní. Druhým hradištěm je Sión, v místě jehož akropole stával hrad husitského hejtmana Roháče z Dubé, které bylo zkoumané v l. 1961–1964. Zde nalezená raně středověká keramika naznačuje dlouhodobé osídlení, trvající od starohradištního období až do mladší a pozdní doby hradištní. Okrajová poloha v raně středověké ekumeně, stejně jako jistá odlehlost od dálkových komunikací a centrálních míst zdejšího regionu naznačují, že obě lokality plnily nejspíše funkce refugií, časem se střídající s kratšími fázemi stabilního osídlení. Obě se nacházejí při z. okraji Čáslavského regionu, který ležel už vně středočeské domény Přemyslovců. Z politicko–správního hlediska je proto pravděpodobná jejich prvotní vazba na kouřimsko–kolínské „knížectví“. and THE EARLY MEDIEVAL KUTNÁ HORA REGION: THE CIMBURK AND SIÓN HILLFORTS. An overview of the evidence of Early Medieval settlement at two spur hill–forts on the Vrchlice river south of Kutná Hora. The first of these is Cimburk, a polycultural upland settlement occupied as early as the Eneolithic, where trenches dug in 1989–1990 revealed settlement features and fortifications (ditch and rampart) dated by ceramics to between the Early and beginning of the Late “Hill–fort” period. The second enclosure is that of Sión, on the site of the acropolis of which the Hussite Hetman Jan Roháč z Dubé built a castle, which was investigated in 1961–1964. The Early Medieval ceramics found here indicate long–term settlement from the Early to the Later and Final “Hill–fort” periods. The peripheral locations of the two sites in the Early Medieval ecumene, along with a certain remoteness from lines of long distance communication and the central places of the region, show that both probably fulfilled the role of refuges, alternating over time with short phases of stable settlement. Both lie on the western edge of the Čáslav region, which lay out of the Přemyslid demesne. From the politico–administrative perspective, it is thus likely that they were originally associated with the Kouřim/Kolín “principality”.
Opevnění vnitřního areálu budečského hradiště zkoumali nezávisle na sobě Z. Váňa a M. Šolle. Oběma autory v podstatě shodně stanovený vývoj hradby na Budči bývá začleňován do studií zabývajících se problematikou raného středověku. V tomto příspěvku proto demonstruji rozdíly ve vývoji vnitřní hradby ve Váňově a Šollově řezu valem. Uvádím výsledky revizního zpracování Šollova výzkumu valu u rotundy sv. Petra a Pavla, které nastiňují novou interpretaci vývoje vnitřního budečského opevnění. Tyto nově stanovené vývojové fáze hradby v prostoru u rotundy pak srovnávám s vývojem hradby ve Váňově řezu valem a předkládám zpřesněné chronologické schéma vývoje vnitřního budečského opevnění. Zároveň přibližuji keramický materiál, o nějž Váňa opřel datování vzniku první raně středověké hradby na Budči do přelomu 8./9. stol. a jejž nikdy nezveřejnil. and On the development of the inner defences at Budeč. The fortification of the inner area of the Budeč hillfort has been investigated independently by Z. Váňa and M. Šolle. Both authors place the development of the rampart at Budeč among those studies considering questions related to the Early Middle Ages. This contribution, then, demonstrates the differences in the evolution of the inner rampart apparent in the sections by Váňa and Šolle. The results are presented of a revision and reassessment of the Šolle’s investigation of the rampart at the Rotunda of SS Peter and Paul, which outlines a new interpretation of the development of the inner defences at Budeč. These newly established developmental phases in the area of the rotunda are then compared with the development of the defences in Váňa’s section through the rampart, and a more precise chronological scheme of the development of the inner defences is provided. In closing, the ceramic material on which Váňa based the dating of the first Early Medieval fortification at Budeč to the turn of the 8th/9th century, and which has not hitherto been published, is considered.
Cílem článku je nové metodické uchopení výzdoby LBK z neolitické lokality v Bylanech u Kutné Hory. Dosavadní interpretace vývoje sídliště je založena na dataci keramického materiálu a trendech vývoje nekeramických artefaktů z tzv. stavebních komplexů. Jedná se o empiricky definované chronologicko-prostorové jednotky, jejichž jádrem je dům. Výchozí otázkou je, zda se jakkoliv změní stávající model sídliště, pokud dojde k dekonstrukci stavebních komplexů. Na základě kvantitativní analýzy stylu keramické výzdoby provedené v úrovni jednotlivých archeologických objektů bylo definováno několik skupin stylu lineární výzdoby. Význam těchto skupin byl validován prostřednictvím prostorové evidence jejich výskytu. Výsledky analýzy umožňují konfrontovat stávající teoretický model neolitických sídlišť s jinou alternativou. and The aim of the article is an innovative methodological understanding of LBK pottery decoration from the site of Bylany, Central Bohemia. The existing interpretation of the settlement development is based on pottery dating and the evolution of non-ceramic artifacts from the so-called “house complexes”. These are empirically defined spatio-temporal units with the house in their centre. The initial question is whether the existing model of the settlement will change in any way if these complexes are deconstructed. Several groups of linear decoration style were defined through quantitative analysis of pottery decoration style performed at the level of individual archaeological features. The meaning of these groups was validated through analysis of their spatial occurrence. The results of the analysis allowed comparison of the existing theoretical model of Neolithic settlements with an alternative.
