Spony získané z oppidálního prostředí ukazují na jejich rámcové datování do rozmezí stupňů LT C2-D1. and The existing distribution of a distinct type of bronze fibula of the Middle La Tène construction with a decorated plate bow is restricted to Central Europe, with a pronounced concentration of finds in Bohemia and Moravia. This fact justifies their designation as “Boiian” fibulae, as proposed by J. Werner. The fibulae acquired from oppida indicate a general dating in the phases LT C2-D1.
V příspěvku jsou předloženy výsledky antropologické expertízy fragmentárního lidského kosterního materiálu z pozdně laténského objektu v Nových Dvorech (okr. Kutná Hora). V objektu byly identifikovány kosterní pozůstatky celkem dvou jedinců. Studium polohových transformací kosterních komponent prokázalo existenci primárního dutého prostoru okolo uložených těl. and Anthropological analysis of skeletal remains from a La Tène feature at Nové Dvory, Central Bohemia. The article presents the results of the anthropological assessment of fragmentary human skeletal material from a Late La Tène feature at Nové Dvory (distr. Kutná Hora). Skeletal remains of two individuals were identified in the feature. Analysis of placement transformations of the skeletal components proved the existence of a primary open space around the deposited bodies.
The recent identification of the most important parts of the late Hallstatt wagon grave from Kladruby near Rokycany in the archaeological collection of National Museum, lost in following years after its discovery in 1907 and known still partly by data from the original documentation by J. L. Píč, and the data obtained by new conservation of all items allow to illustrate also in this type of components the analogous technical, social and economical conditions for the formation of the La Tène civilisation in Western Bohemia, like these which are traditionally supposed only in Western Europe.
Výzkum nivy Robečského potoka zachytil dvě erozní události, které jsou následkem odlesnění a vzniku polí, první v době existence laténského sídliště a druhá nejspíše po založení středověké vsi Okna. and The study deals with the prehistoric development of the Bezděz – Doksy region in Northern Bohemia, with special regard to the excavation of the La Tène settlement at Okna that is cautiously ascribed to the Kobyly group. The settlement is assessed according to the data obtained by palaeobotanic, geobotanic and sedimentologic research of the site as well as the whole studied region which is largely comprised of boreal forest. Its possible use in prehistory and the reasons of late colonization of agricultural lands in its immediate vicinity, which occurs only in late La Tène period and subsequently in the Middle Ages, are discussed. Survey of the alluvial plain of the Robečský brook revealed two erosion events which may be results of deforestation and establishment of fields, first during the existence of the La Tène settlement and the last probably upon foundation of the medieval village of Okna.
Kronenhalsring. Jihovýchodního původu je odlévaná bronzová spona a botka kopí zhotovená podle řeckého vzoru. and In 2005–2016, a metal detector was used to obtain an assemblage of La Tène metal artefacts in the geomorphologically defined region of Malá Haná on the border of eastern Bohemia and southwestern Moravia. The artefacts establish that settlement of the area began at the latest in LT B2. Occupying a prominent position among finds of local provenance are artefacts connected to the industrial and trade centre in Němčice nad Hanou. A ‘Kronenhalsring’(crown-shaped neck-ring) comes from the environment of the Jastorf culture. A cast bronze fibula and spear butt made according to a Greek model are of southeastern origin.
Nález je interpretován jako doklad jedné fáze nedokončeného vícefázového pohřbu – expozice na určeném místě s uskutečněným banketem. and A circular feature delimited by a ditch was excavated in 1995 during a rescue archaeological excavation at the Nové Dvory village near Kutná Hora. Skeletal remains of two individuals, heavily degraded on the surface and originally placed in an open space, a skeleton of a young cattle (Bos taurus), and 55 vessels, were found at the feature’s bottom. The find is interpreted as an evidence of one phase of an unfinished multi-phase burial – an exposition at a designated place accompanied by a feast.
Development-led excavation in Rousínov in 2017 uncovered a La Tène cemetery in which 30 graves were excavated. Out of these, two exceptional graves, a rich female inhumation and a warrior’s cremation grave, are discussed in detail in this paper. In addition to typological determination of artefacts, the paper includes the results of a survey and conservation work on metal artefacts and anthropological analysis. The inhumation burial of a gracile woman at the age of about 30 years (H823) contained, among other things, a complete bimetallic chain-belt; its furnishing can be dated to LT B2/C1. The warrior’s cremation contained, among other things, an undeformed sword in its scabbard and a spear-head with an exceptionally decorated socket; the grave goods date to LT C1.
Zavedení hrnčířského kruhu a dvoukomorových vertikálních pecí v době laténské představuje zásadní změny v hrnčířském řemesle. V článku podáváme přehled o technologii výroby keramiky v době laténské se snahou o hypotetické vymezení základních mechanismů vývoje hrnčířského řemesla zohledňující principy šíření technologických inovací a rozvoje řemeslné specializace. and The introduction of the potter’s wheel and the two-chambered vertical kiln in the La Tène period marked a significant change in the pottery craft. These innovations are some of the reasons for the considerable technological variability in pottery production that stood without parallel in central Europe until the end of the Middle Ages. This technological variability reflects the complexity of relationships in the pottery craft and, indirectly, the dynamic development of social structures in La Tène society. Nevertheless, the study of the social context of the production of pottery based on archaeological sources is complicated by numerous disruptive factors masking the discernible manifestations of processes related to the dynamic technological innovation and development of forms for the organisation of production. Theoretical models based on the anthropological study of technology and experimental archaeology make it possible to posit concrete hypotheses, to specify the potential influence of disruptive factors and, on the other hand, to emphasize the importance of certain variables for the given type of study. These are of key importance when work primarily involves indirect evidence of studied phenomena. The article provides an overview of pottery production technology in the La Tène period, accompanied by an attempt at a hypothetical definition of the basic mechanisms of development in the pottery craft, taking into consideration the principles for the spread of technological innovations and the development of craft specialisation.
Intentional destruction of objects is a rather frequent phenomenon in the Celtic world. In the past, the attention of researchers was primarily focused on damage to weapons. Intentional fragmentation – the breaking of clay vessels – has not yet been sufficiently explored. The subject of the article is these practices documented in La Tène graves in the Carpathian Basin, with a focus on selected cemeteries from the territory of southwest Slovakia (Dubník and Malé Kosihy) and northwest Hungary (Ludas). The author attempts to interpret the reasons for these practices in the context of the funerary rite based on an analysis of ways vessels were intentionally damaged, their position in the grave pit and also the types of these vessels. and Intencionálne ničenie predmetov je u Keltov pomerne častým javom.
Na podporu teze není shledán dostatek argumentů ani ve výpovědi písemných pramenů, ani v dostupném nálezovém fondu. and The article evaluates critically a theory searching for the impulse for the emergence of late La Tène opppida in the north Italian region of Emilia Romagna, where the Celtic tribe of Boii is reported to have dwelt in the 4th - early 2th centuries B.C. After summarising both written and archeological sources for the period and region in question, its interpretation is approached in light of this evidence and subsequently of discussions on the problem which are taking place in Italian archaeology. The theory is found to be insufficiently backed by both written sources and by archaeological evidence.
The article reconsiders the premises of a hypothesis according to which several pottery sherds found in the late La Tène oppida in central Bohemia imitate Mediterranean ceramic forms. The idea of the formal imitation of concrete vase types is questioned on the grounds of chronological and formal inconsistencies. Instead of a problematic theory of formal imitation, functional inspiration is proposed as a more appropriate mechanism to explain the reception of the Mediterranean influence. In one case, only change of the object’s chronology (to the early La Tène period) could help it maintain its status of an imitation.
Výsledky analýz přinášejí nové poznatky o způsobu šíření technologických a výzdobných inovací, resp. o roli dálkových kontaktních spojení mezi jihem a středem Evropy v době halštatské a časné době laténské. and On the origin of imitation of Greek pottery from Plzeň-Roudná and Chržín. The work presents an evaluation of an analysis of the chemical and mineralogical composition of pottery samples of vessels from Plzeň-Roudná and Chržín with meander-like painted decoration, considered to be an imitation of Greek models. Based on comparisons with the composition of shards from local pottery, a domestic origin is presumed for the finds from Chržín and Plzeň-Roudná. A microscopic study of a fragment from Chržín allows also a reconstruction of the painting method used. Results of analyses offer new insight into the method of distribution of technological and decorative innovation, i.e. on the role of long-distance contact routes between Southern and Central Europe during the Hallstatt and Early La Tène periods.
Vedle kolekce keramických i nekeramických artefaktů tak průzkum přinesl zcela nová data, která přispívají k poznání celkového charakteru využití vnitřní plochy oppida v období LT C2–D1. and The article deals with an evaluation of analytical surface collections conducted on the grounds of the České Lhotice oppidum in 2007. Connected to a similar investigation performed in 2004, the work focussed on the ‘central area’, which could not be studied in previous years due to technical reasons. In addition to a collection of ceramic and non-ceramic artefacts, the investigation also produced entirely new data contributing to the understanding of the general character of the use of the internal area of the oppidum in stages LT C2–D1.
Definuje hypotetické vazby mezi keramikou a komplexem pece, počínaje nevyzvednutými vsádkami a konče soubory tvořenými běžným sídlištním odpadem, a vyvozuje archeologické důsledky daných vztahů. Prostějov, a z rovinného sídliště v Hostivicích, okr. Praha-západ. Získané výsledky jsou diskutovány v rámci dalších poznatků získaných v širším kontextu střední Evropy. and Identifying the relationship between pottery firing structures and ceramics that have been found in their spatial context is a key step in the pursuit of understanding the use of a particular type of pottery firing structure and consequently also in the study of the organisation of pottery production. The article focuses on the possibilities of the study of the relationship between La Tène pottery kilns and the ceramic assemblages found in the features representing the remains of these kilns. We define hypothetical relationships between ceramics and a kiln complex, starting with uncollected pottery loads and ending with assemblages representing common settlement refuse, and draw the consequences of these relationships for the character of the archaeological record. Quantitative analysis of formal and technological variability coupled with analysis of fragmentation in the context of other ceramic assemblages from the site is crucial for an interpretation of relationships between the assemblages and the kilns. This approach is demonstrated in two case studies. The first case is from the Staré Hradisko oppidum (Malé Hradisko, Prostějov district), the second from an open land settlement in Hostivice (Praha-západ district). The results are discussed in the framework of other knowledge gained in the wider context of Central Europe.
The article presents a brief summary of newly discovered wooden structures in the well-known polycultural site Mohelnice – štěrkovna (also “U cukrovaru” or Za cukrovarem) in the Mohelnice cadastre and its vicinity. Earlier discoveries at this site include Neolithic timbered wells and a sensational find of an oak monoxylon from the La Tène period of the 4th/3rd century BC (dendro 281 or 301 BC). It was found trapped in its home port on the banks of the meandering river Morava and dating has revealed the same age as the absolutely dated simple wooden pole construction. It is the northernmost found monoxylon known in the Czech Republic and also presents the oldest evidence for such use of ships on Czech rivers. The manufacture and use of such ships has been known since the Mesolithic period continuing until modern times. The subsequent exploration of the shores of the Moravičany Lakes banks revealed a number of smaller wooden structures below the water surface, either made up of pointed stakes themselves, or a combination of smaller stakes and branches built into a tapered corridor resembling a structure used for fishing. The latest discovery is a massive oak-fir structure manufactured from stakes, longitudinal and transverse planks and stones, interpretable as a timber trackway, or a bridge. It has been dendrochronologically dated to 1547–1560 and archival sources indicate the structure was repaired in 1645. The structure spans the former meander between Třeština and Mohelnice near one of the mills. The existence of this route is documented on 18th-century maps. Significant discoveries from various times of mainly wooden buildings underscore at least the European significance of the Mohelnice site. It may yield many valuable finds in the future.
V letech 2010–2016 byl prováděn detektorový průzkum v bezprostředním okolí zaniklých cest v k. ú. Křenov (okr. Svitavy, Pardubický kraj, Česká republika). Mimo jiné byl objeven depot sestávající z železné radlice a čepele meče typu Bell-Zemplín, kterou lze zařadit do pozdní doby laténské až časné doby římské. Z prospekce dále pochází hrot meče z doby římské zhotovený technikou damasku. Nálezy s největší pravděpodobností souvisí s překonáváním obtížného úseku na soudobé komunikaci. and A metal detector survey was conducted in the immediate vicinity of defunct routes in the cadastral territory of Křenov (Svitavy district, Pardubice Region, Czech Republic) in 2010–2016. Findsincluded a hoard composed of an iron ploughshare and the blade of a Bell-Zemplín type sword, which can be dated to the period between the Late La Tène and the Early Roman periods. The surveys also produced a pattern-welded sword point from the Roman Iron Age. The finds are most likely related to the successful passage of a difficult section of the route at the time.
Doposud evidovaných 424 mincí lze rozdělit do tří skupin: domácí keltské, cizí keltské a jiné (antické) ražby. and Information regarding a new settlement site in central Moravia, which appeared at the end of the LT B2 phase and flourished in the LT C1-2, when occupation ended. The finds indicate that this was an important production and trading centre of supra-regional importance, comparable to the nearby oppidum at Staré Hradisko, to which it is related in time. Unlike Staré Hradisko, with its strong links above all to the Bohemia Boii territory, the site of Němčice displays a marked relationship with the Danube basin, with contacts to Slovene and northern Italian territories. The cause underlying the successive existence of the two power centres, with their conspicuously different supra-regional ties, is most likely associated with the major historical changes that took place at the close of the 2nd century BC, with the influx of Germanic tribes into what are now the Czech Lands. This site has yielded what is thus far the largest and, in terms of composition, most significant collection of La Tène coins not only from Moravia but from anywhere on the Middle Danube. The 424 coins identified thus far can be divided into three groups: domestic Celtic, foreign Celtic and other (ancient) mintings.
Soubor více než 2000 ks skel odtud obsahuje nejen stovky finálních produktů – náramků, kroužků, rozdělovačů a korálků, ale v hojné míře i sklářský odpad, polotovary, zmetky a kusy surového skla. Porovnání přírodovědných a archeologických dat ukazuje možnosti a limity využití použitých typů analýz pro jednotlivé aspekty studia skel z laténského období. and The open settlement of Němčice in Moravia (Czech Republic) provides evidence of local glass-working, the earliest so far identified in La Tène Europe. By the LT C1 period at the latest the workshop produced artefacts usually classified as “Celtic glass”. The assemblage of over 2000 objects includes not only hundreds of finished products such as glass bracelets, rings, spacers and beads, but also a considerable quantity of glass-working waste, semi-products and raw glass. A series of glass samples from Němčice and other European sites were submitted to SEM-EDS and NAA analyses. Their results confirmed the similar chemical composition of the glass-working component and finished products from the site to that of other La Tène glass assemblages. Comparison of chemical and archaeological data points to the significance and limits of the applied analytical methods for different aspects of pre-Roman glass research.
The article presents the results of geophysical prospection in the quadrangular enclosure of Markvartice, Jičín district, which was carried out in 2018. The obtained data resulted in new findings about the arrangement of internal buildings within sites of this kind known from the territory of Bohemia. The ascertained form of architectural arrangement of the internal space has exact analogies only in identical types of LT C2–D1 enclosures known from the territory of southern Germany. The questions of its particular form, classification possibilities and importance are discussed. The results also confirm the affiliation of the whole enclosure with La Tène sites, the so-called Viereckschanzen, which was repeatedly disputed in the past. and Článek prezentuje výsledky geofyzikální prospekce čtyřúhelníkového valového areálu v Markvarticích, okr.
Článek je příspěvkem do diskuse, zda v době laténské existoval rozvinutý obchod, kdo jej ovládal, jaký měl význam v tehdejším hospodářství. Není proto nutné pochybovat o tom, že podobně tomu bylo i v Galii, kde je některými historiky existence keltského obchodu zpochybňována. and This article is a contribution to the discussion of whether highly developed trade existed in the La Tène, who controlled it, and how significant it was for the economies of the time. After a definition of terms (‘trade’ is here understood to mean any peaceful exchange of goods), the question is considered for the lands of Central Europe. In this region, developed trade can be observed as early as during the Neolithic; trade in the La Tène period was entirely related to the ancient local traditions of such activity. Any trading activity between Bohemia and the neighbouring regions had to cope with the unsettled territory of the border mountains, and can thus be regarded as comprising long distance trade contacts. Using the examples of the distribution of salt and quernstones, the article demonstrates that trade played an exceptionally important economic and social role in the La Tène. In Central Europe trade was exclusively in the hands of the local population, most likely Celts; there is thus no need to doubt that the situation in Gaul was similar, where some historians have cast doubt on the existence of Celtic trade.
