Spony získané z oppidálního prostředí ukazují na jejich rámcové datování do rozmezí stupňů LT C2-D1. and The existing distribution of a distinct type of bronze fibula of the Middle La Tène construction with a decorated plate bow is restricted to Central Europe, with a pronounced concentration of finds in Bohemia and Moravia. This fact justifies their designation as “Boiian” fibulae, as proposed by J. Werner. The fibulae acquired from oppida indicate a general dating in the phases LT C2-D1.
V roce 2013 uplynulo 170 let od přijetí tzv. „systému tří period“ (doba kamenná, bronzová a železná) v české archeologii. The year 2013 marked the 170th anniversary of the adoption of the ‘three-age system’ (the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age) in Bohemian archaeology. The Dane Christian Jurgensen Thomsen, who published his findings in 1836, is given more credit for the practical application of the three-age system than his contemporaries, the German scholars Lisch and Danneil. The translation of Thomsen’s text into German in 1837 was of fundamental importance for the German-speaking sphere (including Czech). The three-age system was first unambiguously applied in Bohemia by J. V. Hellich, the first curator of archaeology at the National Museum in Prague, in an 1843 manual of Bohemian archaeology, i.e. simultaneously with the adoption of the system in the majority of European countries south of Denmark. The strong resistance to ‘Scandinavism’ in German archaeology in the second half of the nineteenth century was not widely shared in Bohemia. Instead, this system probably ran up against the lingering focus of Bohemian research on ethnohistorical interpretations. It wasn’t until the beginning of the twentieth century that the conflict between the two directions was settled in favour of the full application of the three-age periodisation in the spirit of artefactual positivism.
he paper quantitatively analyses a sample of 300 Czech prayer books and other popular religious handwritten material (not including songbooks) from the 18th and 19th centuries. The author maintains that most of the material consisted of (partial) transcriptions of popular printed books and their widespread popularity was influenced by the growth of literacy and the individualization of piety. Their use was by no means limited to the milieu of the secret non-Catholics which were proscribed until 1781; indeed the majority of Catholic writings were not fully orthodox. The character and decoration of the writings in question were not directly related to the confessional nature of their originators and/or users; in fact the general rules of early modern popular culture played a much more important role and in many cases it is difficult to determine whether the source is catholic, protestant or sectarian. Prayer books fully reflected official forms of religion relatively late i.e. from the tum of the 18th and 19th centuries as a result of church domination over popular piety. However, even at this time the process did not result in absolutes: religious writings substituted the non-existence of baroque literature the printing of which was prohibited by the enlightened censorship prevalent at the time. Only a change in religious forms and new opportunities for the printing of pre-enlightenment books in the mid-19th century led to a decline in handwritten prayer books.
The Triangle cemetery in Prague-Střešovice was the only preserved part of the great burial site from the 9th–10th century AD; this site was partially destroyed beginning in the 18th century by the extraction of clay for the Strahov brick factory. A total of 49 graves, all dated to the 10th century, were uncovered in the preserved part of the cemetery in 2012. Children’s grave no. 16 was the richest of the children’s graves and the second richest of all graves in the cemetery. A total of 19 silver jewels were found in the grave: kaptorga – amulet container, beads, hollow spherical pendants – gombiks. A technical study was performed to describe the construction of the different types of jewels and identify the material used to manufacture them. The artefacts were examined with a stereomicroscope, subjected to X-ray radiography and observed and analysed with scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM/EDS). A replica provided practical information about the time of realisation of each type of jewel. Analogies from the technical and thematic points of view were further searched. The set of jewellery comes from the production of the Prague workshop which enriched the tradition of Great Moravian jewellery with new elements inspired by cultural influences from the west, east and south. and Pohřebiště Triangl bylo jedinou zachovanou částí velkého středohradištního pohřebiště ničeného od 18. století těžbou hlíny pro strahovskou cihelnu.
This note is concerned with a fragmentary gold covered disk brooch which comes from the hill-top settlement of Rubín u Podbořan, a site with evidence of occupation from the later prehistoric to post-Roman phases. Previously published as Roman in date there are strong arguments for relating this piece to a class of early La Tène brooches or mounts normally associated with élite burials or other higher status locations. and Předmětem tohoto příspěvku je fragment pozlacené terčovité spony z výšinného sídliště Rubín u Podbořan, lokality s doklady osídlení od mladšího pravěku. Spona byla v literatuře dříve označována jako římská, nicméně existují pádné důvody ji řadit do kategorie časně laténských spon, obvykle nacházených v elitních pohřbech či jiných prestižních kontextech.
Radiocarbon dates have been obtained for two Middle Upper Palaeolithic sites in Bohemia. Two bones from Lubná I are dated to 21,8 and 21,4 ka BP. They indicate a Late Gravettian occupation, possibly related to the Willendorf–Kostienkian. Two bones from the cultural layer at Jenerálka are dated to 22,5 and 21,9 ka BP. This age is supported by the presence of Saiga tatarica. The assemblage of Jenerálka is problematic. It may represent a mixture of Late Gravettian with Aurignacian artifacts, but a Late Aurignacian is another possibility suggested by the young dates. and Článek přináší prvá radiokarbonová data z lokalit střední fáze mladšího paleolitu v Čechách. Dvě kosti z Lubné I jsou datovány do doby 21 800 a 21 400 B.P. Dosvědčují pozdně gravettské osídlení, s možným vztahem ke skupině Willendorf–Kostěnki. Dvě kosti z kulturní vrstvy v Jenerálce jsou datovány do doby 22 500 a 21 900 B.P. Správnosti takového určení nasvědčuje i přítomnost ostatků Saiga tatarica.
V kruhovém objektu bylo nalezeno 7 hrobů (z toho jeden dvojhrob). and Skeletal material was obtained during the rescue archaeological excavation, which took place in 2009 in Nymburk. At the site were found 10 graves: 8 graves were dated to the Middle Bronze Age and 2 to the Hallstatt period (Bylany culture). This analysis focuses only on the funerals in a circular ditch, which was dated to the Middle Bronze Age. In the circular ditch were found 7 graves.
This article aims to investigate the viewpoint of the
Austro-German liberal movement - both ideologically and practically - towards the arguments for Bohemian state rights made by the conservative Bohemian Great Landowners and Czech political parties in the period from 1861 to 1879. The February Patent of 1861 is a convenient starting point because it reintroduced representative bodies to the Habsburg Monarchy and facilitatedthe development of modern democratic politics. The 1879 parliamentary election is this article’s end point since it constituted a significant turning point in Austrian and Bohemian politics. The Austro-German liberals lost the majority in central parliament while the conservative Bohemian Great Landowners and Czech parties attended parliament after a sixteen-year absence, joining the conservative-Slav coalition supporting the government.
The principal argument is that while the Austro-German liberals (particularly the Bohemian-German faction) were generally opposed to Bohemian state rights, this must be qualifi ed by the genuine desire for compromise (under certain conditions), considerable tactical fl exibility and the wider Imperial context. Chronologically, the article focuses on key parliamentary debates to
illustrate the changing relations: the fluid 1860s, the crucial period from 1867 to 1871 (when there was a real possibility of Bohemian state rights) through to the turning point of 1879. and Článek zahrnuje poznámkový aparát pod čarou
The large compendium titled Die österreichisch-ungarische Monarchie in Wort und Bild contains two volumes devoted to Bohemia (1894 and 1896) and one volume devoted to Moravia and Silesia (1897). Chapters on folk culture are accompanied by a plethora of pictures, a significant number of which depict rural residents wearing traditional dress. However, the informative value of illustrations depicting folk costumes from Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia as a source for ethnological research is limited. The unbalanced selection of examples from individual regions is problematic. Understandably, a great emphasis was placed on the German ethnic group, but even ethnographic regions inhabited by Czech population are not represented proportionally to the preservation of traditional culture, so the resulting visual perception does not even correspond to the reality in the late nineteenth century. Czech painters were addressed to illustrate two volumes about Bohemia, but the Moravia and Silesia volume was illustrated almost exclusively by artists with ties to the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, where they studied or taught, and to the imperial court. However, not only Viennese, but even all Czech painters had no direct experience with the folk culture in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. They worked according to supplied photographs, the availability of which eventually influenced the choice of illustrations. The successful level of both the drawing and painting templates and their xylographic treatments posed a positive aspect. And what is essential - the comparison with the traced model photographs confirms their basically faithful interpretation. Even so, the ethnologist cannot underestimate the critical insight into the documentary value of the illustrations accompanying the admirably monumental work Die österreichisch-ungarische Monarchie in Wort und Bild, named Kronprinzenwerk after its initiator and partly co-author, Crown Prince Rudolf.
The article discusses the methodology employed in the excavation of the outer fortified area of the Early Medieval stronghold at Budeč. This methodology made it possible to establish in the stronghold’s western part, at the “Na kašně” location (field excavation in 1981–1986 and in 1989), the stratigraphic succession of anthropogenic activities, which helped to clarify the character, interconnection and dating of development forms of the outer fortifications and settlement in the studied part of the Budeč foregrounds. and Článek seznamuje s metodikou výzkumu vnějšího opevněného areálu raně středověkého hradiště Budeč, která umožnila v jeho západní části, v poloze Na kašně (terénní výzkum v letech 1981–86, 1989) stanovit stratigrafickou posloupnost antropogenních aktivit, a vedla tak k objasnění charakteru, provázanosti a datování vývojových forem vnějšího opevnění a osídlení ve zkoumané části budečského předhradí.
Předkládaná stať přináší přehled dosavadního stavu pramenné základny, a především na jejím základě formuluje své závěry. and The Jurassic cherts from the area of today’s Bavaria represent a significant phenomenon which, unlike other phenomena, penetrates the Bohemian prehistoric cultural environment from the west. Although these raw materials have been used in the territory of Bohemia continuously at least from the Upper Paleolithic period to the Early Eneolithic, it is possible to observe different trends both in terms of supply amount, and in the preference for individual varieties. The presented paper offers an overview of the current state of source materials, and also forms conclusions on this basis.
Příspěvek přináší komparaci životních osudů a osobnostního vývoje dvou archeologů německého původu, Bolko von Richthofena a Helmuta Preidela. Cílem tohoto srovnání má být zodpovězení otázky před- a poválečné kontinuity nacionálních mýtů, stereotypů a schémat v uvažování německých vědců, kteří působili v tzv. německých východních územích a kteří se po roce 1945 angažovali v tzv. vyhnaneckých organizacích. and The article presents a comparison of the fates and personality developments of two archaeologists of German origin: Bolko von Richthofen and Helmut Preidel. The aim of this comparison is to address the issues of the pre-war and post-war continuity of national myths, stereotypes and schemes in the reflections of German scientists who were active in the so-called eastern German territories and who became involved in expellee organisations after their forced resettlement in the Federal Republic of Germany.
Analýza je založena na rozboru keramiky, součástí statě je i vyhodnocení osteologického materiálu. and The several years lasting research of the Kolín bypass uncovered a number of polycultural sites, among others also features that contained both Bošáca culture and Řivnáč culture pottery. Based on the current knowledge, the Kolín region formed part of the ecumene of the latter culture; origins of the Bošáca pottery are therefore sought in eastern Bohemia that comprised the western outpost of the Bošáca culture expansion. The find is interpreted as an evidence of exogamous relationships connecting regions approx. 50 km apart from each other; hoard of attractively decorated drinking horns in feature no. 4199 refers to a possible ritual or cult role connected with libation or sworn drinking rituals or else vegetative cults. The analysis is based on pottery, and the article includes also assessment of the osteological material.
Jedním z fenoménů spojujících po několik set let okolo roku 4000 př. Kr. Beroun. Práce přináší kromě zevrubného vyhodnocení nálezové situace a všech získaných pramenů první soubor radiouhlíkových dat, zahrnujících i příslušné analýzy z dalších českých vícenásobně přerušovaných ohrazení. V návaznosti na ně je řešena jejich chronologická pozice, kulturní příslušnost a původ fenoménu v Čechách, a v neposlední řadě postavení trubínského objektu v jejich rámci. and One of the phenomena linking the broad area from the Atlantic to central Europe for several centuries around the year 4000 BC is various forms of causewayed enclosures, which are multiply interrupted. Bohemia forms the eastern periphery of their expansion, though few works have been published on this topic to date. The subject of the submitted article is the presentation of one of these causewayed enclosures found in the town of Trubín in the Beroun district. In addition to a detailed evaluation of the find situation and all of the obtained sources, the work provides the first set of radiocarbon dates and the relevant analyses from other Bohemian causewayed enclosures. In connection with them, the article establishes their chronological position, cultural affiliation, the origin of the phenomenon in Bohemia and, last but not least, the standing of the Trubín enclosures in their framework.
Kr. Z více pozoruhodných zahloubených objektů jsou publikovány dva nejvýznamnější – zahloubená chata a dílenský objekt. Datování radiokarbonovou metodou AMS doplňuje relativní chronologii; fyzikálně chemický rozbor strusek z objektů a kapek tavenin na tyglících potvrdily práce s taveninami železa a bronzu na sídlišti; analýzy četných úlomků jantaru potvrzují transport této suroviny od Baltského moře. and The paper focuses on discoveries from the early La Tène settlement in Chržín, Kladno distr., providing documentation of rare production activities and long-distance contact with southern and northern Europe. New findings from this Central Bohemian low-land settlement are examined in the broader context of the cultural development of Europe in the 6th and 5th centuries B.C. Remarkable finds are offered by several sunken features, with only the two most significant published here – a sunken hut and a workshop feature. Relative chronology is supplemented by AMS radiocarbon dating. Physical and chemical analyses – X-ray diffraction, determination of selected trace elements (FAAS), electron microanalysis (EDX) – of slag from the features, and of drops of metal on the furnaces, have confirmed that iron and bronze were worked at the settlement; analyses of numerous amber fragments have confirmed that this raw material was transported from the Baltic sea; and information on a rondel made from a child’s skull was provided by an anthropological assessment.
The cold hardiness of individuals from overwintering populations of a freeze susceptible bug Pyrrhocoris apterus from central and southern Europe differed significantly. Supercooling point (SCP) correlated well with both lethal temperature (LT50) and lethal time (Lt50), and is agood index of cold hardiness of adults during and after diapause. In January, diapause terminated, but cold hardiness was similar to that recorded in November; cold hardiness decreased slightly in March and markedly in May. Short exposure (less than a week) to higher temperatures before termination of diapause did not reduce the cold hardiness. Cold hardiness did not closely follow air temperatures. The Bulgarian bugs retained lower cold hardiness regardless of acclimation to harsh field conditions in the Czech Republic. The interpopulation difference is therefore a heritable character representing an adjustment to local climates.
J.-C. plutôt que balkanique. and Considerations about the meaning and the origin of the pectoral-brooch from Želenice in Bohemia. The pectoral-brooch from Želenice, discovered in 1843, is one of the most illustrated and discussed Iron age archeological discoveries from Bohemia. A new research, based on a Late bronze age pectoral from Slovakia, indicates a symbolic representation of the measure to correct the difference between lunar and solar year (two supplementary months every five years). Before, only three evidences are known: an engraving on stone slab from Knowth in Ireland, from the fourth millenium B.C., the Slovak pectoral, dated around 1200 B.C., and the calendar of Coligny, second century A.D. The origin of the pectoral-brooch from Želenice, now dated in the fifth century B.C., seems to be central alpine area rather than Balkans.
Fictional King of Morocco is mythical figure of Biblical proportions, herald of Apocalypse, usually associated with prophetical songs of Tolerance Sectarians from eastern Bohemia. Presented article deals with the motif of King of Morocco in these songs and tries to analyze its origin. Various sources of this oral tradition are discussed, like great influence of Protestant political prophecies, heterodox prophecies and folklore narratives of the period. The character of King of Morocco represents an affiliated motif to a specific corpus of oral traditions, consisting of apocalyptical narrative pattern about the Judgment Day. Origin of the motif of King of Morocco remains obscure; however, the popular reception of diplomatic visit of envoy of Sultan of Morocco to Vienna in 1783, combined with misinterpreted news about Tolerance Decree, seems to be the most probable source. Although associated with oral culture of Tolerance Sectarians, the whole narrative pattern was disseminated more widely and lived on in Czech oral tradition at least until 1848.
The almanacs represented an important source and constituent part of the popular culture in the „long“ nineteenth century. The text focuses on the by now slightly studied almanacs of Czech Protestants and, as a supplement, also contains its register. First Protestant calendars were published after the authorization of Protestant denominations at the end of the eighteenth century, but due to the economic weakness of these minorities soon ceased to exist. The next wave of their publishing was connected with liberalism of the middle of the nineteenth century and the social emancipation of Protestants. But the defeat of the revolution of 1848 again caused their demise. Systematic publishing of Protestant almanacs took place only in the last third of the nineteenth century, when their principal role was the gradual deepening of the confessional consciousness. From the beginning of the twentieth century these almanacs were used in the efforts for uniting of Czech Lutheran and Reformed Churches. This union was realized after the constitution of Czechoslovakia in the year 1918. Later Protestant almanacs were mostly regular ecclesiastical yearbooks without broader implications.
During archaeological excavations of three La Tène features in 2001 and 2002 at the periphery of the Velké Zboží and Malé Zboží cadasters (Nymburk district), a total of 33 animal bones were obtained. Only domestic mammals were determined in the material: cattle, sheep/goat (of which only sheep is reliably documented), pig, horse and dog. A valuable find from feat. 8 (LT C2-D1) is a horn core from a domestic cattle (Bos taurus), which shows signs of pathology. The pathology comes in the form of a depression on the anterior surface, which leads to the narrowing of the horn. Such pathology is considered to be the result of long-term use of a forehead yoke. The find represents one of a few documented cases of the use of the yoke in prehistory in the territory of today’s Czech Republic. A hornless sheep is documented at another feature. and Při archeologickém výzkumu tří laténských objektů v letech 2001 a 2002 na hranici katastrů Velkého Zboží a Malého Zboží bylo získáno celkem 33 zvířecích kostí. V materiálu byly determinovány pouze domácí druhy savců: tur, ovce/koza (z nich spolehlivě doložena pouze ovce), prase, kůň a pes.
Použití draselno-vápenatého skla k jejich výrobě poskytuje další doklad inovačních procesů evropského sklářství. and Using visual observations and chemical analyses, it is possible to distinguish a separate type of Early Medieval beads designated as „G-beads“ on the basis of the material from which they are made. Finds of these beads are typical for the horizon of Early Medieval burial sites in Bohemia. The inventory of grave goods includes olive-shaped beads, Danube River basin jewellery and jewellery of Great Moravian origin or tradition. Along with the olive-shaped beads, the G-beads can be regarded as another indicator of the production of glass jewels in central Europe at the end of the 9th century through the first half of the 10th century. The use of wood-ash glass in the production of the beads is further evidence of the innovative processes employed in European glassmaking.
Pro kulturní i absolutní zařazení velkých souborů předmětů, získaných výzkumy prakticky pod ornicí, scházejí nesporné morfologické, stratigrafické a jiné přírodovědné argumenty. Data vzešlá z těchto výzkumů autor porovnává s výsledky z precizně zkoumaných evropských lokalit. Současně shrnuje aktuální stav bádání o starém paleolitu v Evropě a do jeho kontextu řadí nejstarší doklady přítomnosti člověka z Čech a Moravy. and The aim of the article is to point out the uncertainty accompanying studies of the Palaeolithic period in Bohemia, particularly in recent publications. Indisputable morphological, stratigraphic and other natural science arguments are lacking for cultural and absolute classification of larger assemblages of finds obtained by terrain excavation. The author of the article compares the data resulting from these excavations with meticulously investigated European sites. At the same time, the author also summarises the current state of research into Early Palaeolithic Europe and classifies the oldest evidence of man in Bohemia and Moravia into its context.
Na podporu teze není shledán dostatek argumentů ani ve výpovědi písemných pramenů, ani v dostupném nálezovém fondu. and The article evaluates critically a theory searching for the impulse for the emergence of late La Tène opppida in the north Italian region of Emilia Romagna, where the Celtic tribe of Boii is reported to have dwelt in the 4th - early 2th centuries B.C. After summarising both written and archeological sources for the period and region in question, its interpretation is approached in light of this evidence and subsequently of discussions on the problem which are taking place in Italian archaeology. The theory is found to be insufficiently backed by both written sources and by archaeological evidence.
The article reconsiders the premises of a hypothesis according to which several pottery sherds found in the late La Tène oppida in central Bohemia imitate Mediterranean ceramic forms. The idea of the formal imitation of concrete vase types is questioned on the grounds of chronological and formal inconsistencies. Instead of a problematic theory of formal imitation, functional inspiration is proposed as a more appropriate mechanism to explain the reception of the Mediterranean influence. In one case, only change of the object’s chronology (to the early La Tène period) could help it maintain its status of an imitation.
Dlouhodobý průzkum severovýchodního okolí Prahy poskytl značné množství archeologických pramenů různých období, mj. památek řivnáčské kultury z konce středního eneolitu (ca 3100–2800 BC). Nejdůležitější soubor pochází z polozemnice obj. 13/76 v Praze-Dubči ze starší fáze řivnáčské kultury. Z jejího inventáře zaujme zejména hojný výskyt formálně archaické hrubotvaré industrie. Na základě distribuce a četnosti 16 evidovaných lokalit řivnáčské kultury ve sledované oblasti a jejího srovnání s jinými regiony se autoři zabývají otázkou, zda tamější výrobní aktivity nositelů této kultury byly převážně zemědělské, nebo zda mohly být v některých méně příhodných oblastech též pastevecké. and On the settlement of the Řivnáč culture on the eastern periphery of Prague. The long-term research in the north-eastern area of Prague have yielded a substantial amount of archaeological evidence from various periods, including relics of the Řivnáč culture from the end of the Middle Eneolithic (ca 3100–2800 BC). The most important assemblage stems from feat. (pit-house) No. 13/76 in Prague-Dubeč, dating to the earlier phase of the Řivnáč culture. Of particular interest in its inventory is the abundant occurrence of the formally archaic heavy-tool industry. Based on the distribution and frequency of 16 recorded localities of the Řivnáč culture in the studied area and their comparison with other regions, the authors focus on the question of whether the local manufacturing activities conducted by the bearers of this culture were primarily agricultural in nature or whether they may also have been pastoral in less suitable areas.
Také v tomto případě však naznačuje prvkové složení původ mísy v oblasti Apeninského poloostrova. and Specimens of bowls with pearl-like studded rim in Bohemia include one from Slatina and another one from Hradenín. Yet another bowl of this type, supposedly from Nebovidy, is deposited in the Kolín museum. It is a specimen of Italic provenience made during the second half of the 6th to the first half of the 5th centuries BC. Results of the analyses of the elemental composition of the material used on the bowl confirm its provenience. The article quotes also the results of the analyses of the elemental composition of the material used on the Hohmichele type bowl from Hradenín. The elemental composition indicates also in this case the origin of the bowl at the Italian Peninsula.
Výsledky analýz přinášejí nové poznatky o způsobu šíření technologických a výzdobných inovací, resp. o roli dálkových kontaktních spojení mezi jihem a středem Evropy v době halštatské a časné době laténské. and On the origin of imitation of Greek pottery from Plzeň-Roudná and Chržín. The work presents an evaluation of an analysis of the chemical and mineralogical composition of pottery samples of vessels from Plzeň-Roudná and Chržín with meander-like painted decoration, considered to be an imitation of Greek models. Based on comparisons with the composition of shards from local pottery, a domestic origin is presumed for the finds from Chržín and Plzeň-Roudná. A microscopic study of a fragment from Chržín allows also a reconstruction of the painting method used. Results of analyses offer new insight into the method of distribution of technological and decorative innovation, i.e. on the role of long-distance contact routes between Southern and Central Europe during the Hallstatt and Early La Tène periods.
Vedle kolekce keramických i nekeramických artefaktů tak průzkum přinesl zcela nová data, která přispívají k poznání celkového charakteru využití vnitřní plochy oppida v období LT C2–D1. and The article deals with an evaluation of analytical surface collections conducted on the grounds of the České Lhotice oppidum in 2007. Connected to a similar investigation performed in 2004, the work focussed on the ‘central area’, which could not be studied in previous years due to technical reasons. In addition to a collection of ceramic and non-ceramic artefacts, the investigation also produced entirely new data contributing to the understanding of the general character of the use of the internal area of the oppidum in stages LT C2–D1.
Studie shrnuje poznatky z revizního průzkumu zlomku kovového předmětu z akropole hradiště v Libici nad Cidlinou, interpretovaného doposud jako fragment raně středověkého zvonu. Na základě morfologického a typologického rozboru, metalografické analýzy, chemických expertíz i zhodnocení výpovědní schopnosti archeologického kontextu autoři vylučují takovou interpretaci a dokazují, že se jedná o zlomek okraje hmoždíře či jiného litinového odlitku z dob průmyslové revoluce nebo i mladší. and The study summarizes information from the review of the fragment of a metal object from the acropolis of the fortified settlement in Libice nad Cidlinou from the collections of the National Museum in Prague interpreted heretofore as a fragment of an early medieval bell. On the basis of morphological and typological analyses, metallographic examination, chemical expertise and an evaluation of the testimonial capability of the archaeological context, the authors rule out the original interpretation and demonstrate that the object is a fragment of the rim of a mortar or other cast-iron product from the period of the Industrial Revolution or even later.
V závěru jsou poznatky konfrontovány s dosavadním pojetím tzv. přemyslovské domény. and The text addresses early medieval strongholds in the central part of Bohemia – the territory connected with the beginnings of the Přemyslid dynasty and the origin of the early Czech state. We first deal with the dating of strongholds, mostly on the basis of archaeological sources alone. The chronology of these buildings has been elaborated significantly in recent years. On the basis of a synoptic review a summary of the development of strongholds during the 9th and 10th centuries is then presented. The conclusion offers a comparison of this new information with existing concepts of the “Přemyslid domain,” which, in the author’s opinion, requires revision.
As a foot-note to the early La Tène stamped sherd from Kanín (Central Bohemia) the question as to the nature of the implement used is revisited. An analogy with the pintaderas of the Vekerzug culture raises possibility of the use of ceramic stamps rather than ones of bone or wood or metal evidence for which in neither case has to date been found. and Ještě ke zlomku kolkované keramiky z Kanína.
Autoři zároveň shrnuli informace o 9 keramických depotech té doby z Čech a také nálezy kultury mohylové z východní části území Prahy. Na základě srovnání osídlení tohoto mikroregionu s mapami nálezů střední doby bronzové, ale i jiných pravěkých období na území Prahy, uvažují o interpretačním využití výpovědi archeologických map. and The publication of a Middle Bronze Age Tumuli culture pottery deposit find in Prague 9 – Běchovice (ca. 60 vessels, including 49 cups) apparently represents the tangible evidence of a ritual oath. The authors have also collected information on nine pottery deposits from this period in Bohemia, as well as Tumuli culture finds from the eastern part of Prague. On the basis of a comparison of the settlement of this microregion with maps of finds from the Middle Bronze Age and other prehistoric periods within the territory of Prague, the authors speculate on the interpretive application of testimony from the archaeological maps.
Archeologický a stavebně historický výzkum minoritského areálu v Mostě probíhal v letech 1971–1976 v souvislosti s likvidací významného historického města. Konvent stával takřka uprostřed města, k důležitým tématům proto patřilo archeologické svědectví o počáteční urbanizaci dané části městského jádra. and The Minorite Monastery in Most. An archaeological and building history study of the Minorite grounds in Most took place in 1971–1976 due to the liquidation of the notable historic town. The study focussed on learning about the development of the church and the reclusion of the Most Minorites in the 13th-14th centuries, and on unravelling the position of their convent within the town organism. The convent stood approximately in the town centre; archaeological testaments on the beginnings of urbanisation in the given town centre are therefore of utmost importance.
In this study I focus on the reconstruction of the state of the book culture in medieval Louny. This is a closely related question ot the origin of the historiography here. Inicially, I outline the preconditions for reception of the book culture and pursue the milieus where books could be used. I also pay attention to the ancestors of the historiography in this town, which are in important precursor to their fully developed forms. Finally, I deal with the oldest annals that originated in Louny.
Hlavní pozornost věnovali autoři topografii lokality, vymezení základních vývojových fází a jejich absolutní chronologii a charakteristice jednotlivých etap archeologického výzkumu. and This article summarises the results of over a century of archaeological investigations at the Early Medieval castle at Libice nad Cidlinou and its agglomeration. Although the size of the archaeologically assessed area ranks Libice as one of the foremost early medieval centres, the insufficient state of processing calls for a clearly defined focus and, more particularly, research aims. Here the authors have concentrated on the topography of the site, the delimitation of the major developmental phases and their absolute chronology, and the characteristics of the various phases of archaeological investigation.
The topic of this article is the engagement of Lipolt Krajíř of Kraig († 1433) in the Hussite wars. Krajíř was among the innumerable members of Sigismund of Luxembourg’s retinue who actively fought the Hussites in three central European lands. Lipolt’s importance within the Catholic party is especially proven by the fact that he was transferred—by Sigismund of Luxembourg and then by the Austrian Duke and Moravian Margrave Albert II of Habsburg—to places which were long threatened by the Hussites (České Budějovice) or actually under attack by them (Moravia, Austria).
Na českém území jde prozatím o jediný artefakt, u kterého lze využití kelímkové oceli diskutovat. and The study offers an analysis of a sword found in grave no. 120 in the burial
ground at the stronghold of Stará Kouřim. Deposited in one of the richest grave units of early medieval Bohemia, the double-edged sword with a blade with pattern-welded surface panels does not bear any distinct typological features. From a morphological perspective, the sword stands out from other weapons of this period primarily due to its short length. A metallographic examination showed that the sword is a high-quality weapon with edges made of hypereutectoid steel, which could even be a certain type of crucible steel. For now this is the only artefact from Czech territory for which a possibility of use of crucible steel can be discussed.
Tinkering as a peddling job and sale developed in the northern part of the Trenčín Region (Upper Váh Area and Kysuce) and later in several villages in the northern part of Spiš. As a specific (non-farming) job of a group of male population, tinkering is a phenomenon that significantly influenced traditional culture in the above-mentioned regions. The affiliation with the tinker´s
socio-professional group was expressed not only by the itinerant livelihood, but it also was transferred to social activities and common personal contacts. The tinkers differed from peasants through their world view, peculiar morality, value guidance, but mainly through their experience and more real view of the world. They featured good dexterity in communication with authorities due to the obligation to arrange for documents which were necessary for them to be allowed to operate tinkering in the Czechoslovak Republic. Labour migration also affected incomes, possibilities of catering, dressing, habitation, and hygiene of itinerant tinkers. The essay explains these facts in relation to the tinkers from Kysuce, who migrated for work to Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia between world wars.
Nejstarší vrstvy zásypu, datované do doby kolem přelomu 13. a 14. stol., odpovídají době změny vlastníka i statutu města, a patrně i změn urbanistických. Archeobotanické analýzy jednotlivých zásypových vrstev dovolují sledovat vývoj synantropní vegetace v okolí zkoumané polohy a změny v hospodaření s přírodními zdroji v exponované poloze podhůří Krkonoš v rozmezí 14. až 16. století. Nálezy naklíčených obilek ječmene dokládají kontinuální výrobu piva nejpozději od přelomu 14. a 15. stol. v místě, kde písemné prameny ze 16. stol. dokládají městský pivovar. and The fill of a terrain depression of unknown origin discovered in the centre of Trutnov provided material for archaeobotanical analysis. The oldest layers of the fill, dated to the turn of the 14th century, correspond to the period of change in the town’s owner and charter, and evidently to urbanistic changes as well. Archaeobotonical analyses of the individual fill layers make it possible to track the development of synanthropic vegetation in the area around the studied site and changes in the utilization of natural resources in the foothills of the Krkonoše Mts. between the 14th and 16th centuries. A find of germinated grains of barley is evidence of the continual production of beer at least from the end of the 14th century at a site where written sources from the 16th century document the town brewery.
The Neolithic quarrying complex discovered in 2002 in the Jistebsko cadastre (in the Jizera Mountains) is one of the oldest and largest relicts of its type in the Czech Republic. The raw material scatter indicates that the extraction and processing of the raw materials for polished stone tools, probably for distribution across contemporary Central Europe, began in the earliest phase of the Neolithic (the Linear Pottery culture – 5400 BC, Turnov-Maškovy zahrady: Šída forthcoming a) and probably continued through to the end of the early phase of the Stroke-Ornamented Ware culture (4500 BC). The completely preserved complex, covering 21.2 ha, is the only such monument known to have been preserved, and its significance extends well beyond the borders of the Czech Republic. The first radiocarbon dates for the site were obtained last year. The first, sampled from the surface layers, dates to the 16th century AD and shows that the whole area was deforested. The second date, from charcoal lying at the bottom of an extraction pit, falls somewhere in the period 5150–4920 BC, i.e. during the transition from the Linear Pottery to Stroke-Ornamented Ware cultures. and Neolitický těžební areál objevený v roce 2002 na katastru obce Jistebsko (Jizerské hory) patří mezi největší a nejstarší památky svého druhu v České republice. Těžba a zpracování suroviny, která sloužila k výrobě kamenných broušených nástrojů a zásobovala pravděpodobně tehdejší střední Evropu, zde podle zjištění rozptylu suroviny probíhala od nejstarší fáze neolitu (kultura s keramikou lineární – 5400 BC, Turnov – Maškovy zahrady: Šída v tisku a) pravděpodobně až do konce starší fáze kultury s vypíchanou keramikou (4500 BC). Zcela intaktně zachovalý areál o ploše 21,2 ha představuje jedinečně zachovalou památku svého druhu, jejíž význam výrazně překračuje hranice České republiky. V uplynulém roce byly získány první radiokarbonová data pro lokalitu. První, pocházející ze vzorku z povrchových vrstev, náleží 16. století a dokumentuje výrazné odlesnění celého prostoru. Druhé datum, pocházející z uhlíku ležícího na dně těžební jámy, spadá do období 5150 až 4920 BC, tedy na rozhraní kultur s lineární a vypíchanou keramikou.
Studie se pokouší rekapitulovat základní vývojové tendence a charakterizovat současný stav archeologického výzkumu v oblasti středověké těžby a zpracování rud v Čechách. Česká středověká archeologie by měla systematickým propracováváním analytických a interpretačních možností svých pramenů zvýraznit svůj podíl na řešení technologických, ekonomicko–sociálních, sídelních, kulturních a ekologických otázek spojených se středověkou exploatací surovin. and This study attempts to recapitulate the basic developments in, and describe the present state of, archaeological research in the areas of medieval ore extraction and processing in Bohemia. It aims to draw attention to the major problems and issues linked to this specialised research area, both in terms of the collection and analysis of data and at the level of theory and interpretation. Czech archaeology should systematically develop the opportunities for analysis and interpretation provided by its sources to emphasize their contribution to the resolution of the technological, socio–economic, settlement, cultural and environmental questions associated with the medieval exploitation of raw materials.
Zároveň získaná radiokarbonová data obohacují naše poznání o aktivity probíhající na Bílém kameni v pozdním středověku a raném novověku. and The article presents a current view of the issue of the Neolithic mining site of Bílý kámen near Sázava (Czech Republic, Benešov district). The results are based both on an analysis of earlier finds and on the finds from a new archaeological excavation. The findings show that the traditional idea of one of the most important monuments of prehistoric mining activities of non-silicate rock in Central Europe will need to be substantially revised. The fact that it is not the main source of the raw material of marble bracelets during the period of the Stroked Pottery culture (5100/5000–4500/4400 cal BC) opens new space in a seemingly long-resolved discussion. Radiocarbon data enrich our knowledge of the activities taking place at Bílý kámen in the Late Middle Ages and Early Modern period.
Hrady byly rozděleny do tří skupin: hrady přechodného typu, hrady s obvodovou zástavbou a francouzské kastely (např. Navíc i přístup k pramenům a jejich hodnocení, které byly východiskem definice, vykazují zásadní věcné nedostatky. and On castles of the “transitional” type. This article is a contribution in the area of the typology of Bohemian High Medieval castles. The typology of 13th century royal castles in Bohemia was established thirty years ago, on the basis above all of archaeological excavations in the hunting grounds of the Czech kings. Castles were divided into three groups: castles of the transitional type, castles with perimeter buildings and French castels (e.g. Durdík 2002b). The finds situations of these excavations remain to this day unpublished, however. After critiques of the justification for the typological definition of the French castel (Razím 2002; 2005), the author now turns to an evaluation, from the same point of view, of castles of the transitional type, which supposedly stand at the line of division between Early Medieval fortifications and High Medieval castles. Analysis of all of the available information, however, leads to the conclusion that castles of the transitional type have not been justifiably defined. Moreover, even the approaches taken hitherto to the source material, and the evaluation of the latter – which formed the departure point for the definition – exhibit fundamental material shortcomings.
Významnou roli v urbanizačním procesu zaujímají nedávno objevená neopevněná výrobní a distribuční centra a centra typu Němčice-Roseldorf, v nichž lze spatřovat počátky urbanizace střední Evropy v době laténské. Oppidům je naproti tomu přisouzena především obranná a prestižní úloha. and The article offers an outline of the history of research into oppida and urbanisation processes of the La Tène period in Central Europe. The author addresses the fact that the interpretation of oppida as towns came about at the beginning of the 20th century when, besides a few oppida, no other La Tène settlements were known at all. Today this interpretation does not correspond with what we know regarding the La Tène settlement structure. Recently discovered unfortified production and distribution centres and centres of Němčice-Roseldorf type play a significant role in the urbanisation process, in which we are able to see the beginnings of urbanisation of Central Europe during the La Tène period. As opposed to these, the oppida are attributed tasks primarily of a defensive and prestigious nature.
Mikroregion 1 patří do povodí Ohře; z této strany dochází k neolitizaci celé kotliny. Vlastní kotlina byla kontinuálně osídlena od nejstaršího stupně LnK až do mladší fázeVK (IVb). and Settlement of the Rakovník district during the time of the Stroked Pottery culture. The subject of this paper is the settlement of the Rakovník district during the time of the Stroked Pottery culture and briefly the Linear Pottery culture as well. To date, no larger excavations focused on this period have been performed in the region – the highest Neolithic settlement region in Bohemia. The main credit for our knowledge of local prehistory goes to local collectors. Neolithic sites (31 in all, of which 23 are linear pottery and 26 with stroked pottery) are clustered into five microregions. Microregion 1 is in the Ohře watershed; from here neolithisation spread to the entire basin. Microregions 2–4 form the core settlement. Microregion 5, which lies in the Loděnice watershed, is located on the borders of the basin; it was settled later, from the east. Microregion 2 shows strong contacts with flint mining regions in lower Bavaria. It is thus likely that the local settlements to a large extent participated in the import and distribution of this raw material. The basin itself was continuously settled from the early linear pottery to the late stroked pottery period (IVb).
Autor se proto domnívá, že vyčlenění skupiny představuje již překonaný koncept archeologie minulého století. and On the basis of an evaluation of the eponymous site of Podmokly in North Bohemia, the article shows that the perception of the site and of the entire so-called Podmokly group was significantly influenced by two facts in the course of the development of research. First and foremost, the graves and finds from the Late Iron Age at the Podmokly cemetery and other sites were interpreted out of context. The other unfavourable factor was the focus of research on solving questions of ethnicity. The author comes to the conclusion that the group represents an inseparable part of continuous settlement in the Elbe ravine. A review of the definitions of the Podmokly group revealed that only a single artefact remains today for definition purposes – the so-called Podmokly pin. The author therefore believes that the differentiation of this group represents an outdated concept from twentieth-century archaeology.
Přestože některé z těchto kruhových struktur mohou být relikty původních mohyl vymezených žlaby či palisádami, některé konstrukční prvky a další indicie naznačují, že v řadě případů se nejspíše jednalo o kruhové pohřební areály, jejichž vnitřní plocha nebyla pokryta souvislým mohylovým násypem. and The paper presents an evaluation of the round burial area from the Middle Bronze Age discovered in 2008 during a rescue archaeological excavation in Nymburk in central Bohemia. The unique quality of the burial area lies in the fact that it is the first registered case in Bohemia in which burials are deposited directly in a round ditch, not in the central burial chamber in the space demarcated by this ditch. The paper likewise addresses the interpretation of features created by round ditches that are usually reconstructed as barrows. Although some of these round structures could be remnants of original barrows demarcated by ditches or palisades, certain construction elements and other evidence suggests that many of them could in fact have been round burial areas on flat ground whose internal space was not covered by a continual mound.
V oblasti Českého ráje nebyly dlouhou dobu pozdně paleolitické a mezolitické nálezy známé. Největší situace a kolekce přitom byly zkoumány již před druhou světovou válkou, dlouho však zůstávaly nerozpoznány. Teprve důkladná revize nálezového fondu v posledních několika letech umožnila rozšířit počet lokalit na dnešních 19. Vedle revizí jsme přistoupili i k novým revizním výzkumům. Z Českého ráje pochází i jeden z mála uměleckých předmětů mezolitu v ČR. Znalost této suroviny v mezolitu a její extrémně rychlé a široké rozšíření ukazují na kulturní kontakty mezi mezolitickou populací a prvními zemědělci. and For a long time, Late Palaeolithic and Mesolithic finds were not known in the region of the Bohemian Paradise (Český ráj). The largest sites and collections had already been explored prior to the Second World War, but these long remained unrecognised. It was not until a thorough review of finds in recent years that we have been able to expand the number of localities to today’s 19. In addition, we have also proceeded with new excavations. The Bohemian Paradise has even yielded one of the few works of art of the Mesolithic found in the Czech Republic. An interesting phenomenon is the use of Jizera-type metabasites, which served for making axes as early as the Mesolithic. Familiarity with this raw material in the Mesolithic and its extremely quick and extensive dispersion indicate the existence of cultural contacts between the Mesolithic population and the first agriculturalists.
The paper focuses on the patronage of Cardinal Jacoppo Stefaneschi (died 1343) viewed from the perspective of book and monumental painting in the context of more general problems. First it analyses the relationship between the aesthetically discerning patron and Giotto, a celebrated artist tending towards a different style orientation and then it outlines some conceivable ramifications of this association for the further development of Giotto´s workshop. It examines the possible iconographic significance of the Stefaneschi altar in the period political context, and following this proposes more precise dating of the Stefaneschi Triptych and the Codex of St George. This layer of Italian art is immensely inspiring for the subsequent development of Bohemian painting in the period of the Luxembourgs.
Traditionally, only two native localities of Ligularia sibirica have been reported from the Czech Republic. In the present paper, a correction is made as to the founder of the locality between Jestřebí and Staré Splavy near Doksy (50°36'23" N, 14°36'54" E) which was discovered by J. Ch. Neumann in 1814 the latest, i.e. earlier than thought. The species has been retreating from this locality because of changes in environmental conditions, with the decrease of groundwater level after amelioration in 1928 being the most important factor. However, the species is not yet endangered in the locality. The second locality is between Bělá pod Bezdězem and Bakov nad Jizerou (50°29'45" N, 14°54'39" E) and it was not discovered by anybody of those reported up to now but by V. J. Sekera; the discovery was not made in 1854 but as early as in 1843. This locality consists of several populations and its size has increased during the last 100 years. Bohemian localities, which are rather distant from the continuous distribution of the species, originated in the early postglacial period (Praeboreal) and represent remnants of former more extensive distribution in this region. The cultivation of the species and its secondary occurrence are rare and mostly unimportant events.
Zvýšená pozornost je věnována výpovědi vyplývající z prostorové korelace zahloubených objektů dané kultury s obdobně datovanými intruzemi z mladších situací, pro jejíž studium naleziště poskytuje mimořádně příznivé podmínky. and The contribution to the spatial structure of the residential area at the end of the Middle Eneolithic period. Řivnáč settlement in the Vlíněves, Central Bohemia. Several years of excavations in the Vlíněves sand quarry (district Mělník) produced an evidence of abundant finds of various prehistoric periods including the Řivnáč culture of the Middle Eneolithic period (circa 3000 BC). The questions of variability in archaeologisation of Řivnáč culture opened landscape settlement forms are analysed based on published analyses of artefacts, plant remains, archaeozoological and anthracological finds. Special attention is paid to the spatial correlation of Řivnáč culture sunken features with the contemporary artefacts intruded into the features of later prehistoric periods. The site offers exceptionally suitable conditions for such study.
Mají rozmanitou povahu, funkci a původ. Kromě materiálových analýz nebyla dosud slitkům původem z Čech věnována komplexní systematická pozornost, a to zejména z hlediska jejich podrobné deskripce a z ní vyplývajících dat k posouzení druhu produktů. Výzkum se zaměřil na studium formálních vlastností slitků, kategorií hutnických a slévačských produktů v rámci operačního řetězce metalurgie bronzu a vzorců organizačního a technologického zacházení v rámci různého prostoru a času. Využity a komparovány byly jak klasické archeologické metody dokumentace, tak přírodovědné analytické metody. and The study contributes to knowledge of the Bronze Age tin bronze production process based on the testimony of metal raw materials. This concerns evidence of metallurgical activities both in the form of semi-finished products/ingots and waste generated during production activities. Metal raw materials of a diverse nature, function and provenance occur in various contexts throughout most of the Bronze Age. Besides material analyses, metal raw materials originating in Bohemia have not yet received comprehensive systematic attention, especially in terms of their detailed description and the resulting data to assess types of products. The research focused on a study of the formal properties of metal raw materials, categories of smelting and casting products within the operational chain of bronze metallurgy and patterns of organisational and technological treatment in various space and time contexts. Both classical archaeological methods of documentation and scientific analytical methods were used and compared.
Nově identifikovaná kategorie středověkých artefaktů z českých archeologických fondů představuje jeden z atributů zacházení s drahými kovy. Šest dosud evidovaných předmětů datovatelných do raného středověku pochází z různých kontextů sociálních (hrad, sídelní aglomerace, ves) i archeologických (hrob, sídlištní objekt, hradiště). Autoři zdůrazňují nezbytnost potvrzení přítomnosti stop zkoušeného kovu chemickými mikroanalýzami, a to nejen pro interpretaci artefaktu, ale i pro poznání prostředí, které manipulovalo s drahými kovy i s podvrhy, a v neposlední řadě pro upřesnění názorů na dovednosti středověkých metalurgů. and A newly identified category of medieval artefacts from Czech archaeological inventories represents one indicator of the manner in which precious metals were handled: six objects date from various social (castle, settlement agglomeration, village) and archaeological (grave, settlement feature, hillfort) early medieval contexts. The authors emphasize the necessity of confirming the presence of traces from the tested metal by chemical microanalysis, not only for interpreting the artefacts themselves, but also for understanding the environment in which both precious and spurious metals were handled.
Práce přináší výsledky první geochemické analýzy provedené na pravěkých obsidiánových artefaktech z území Čech. Ke studiu bylo vybráno jedenáct vzorků s důvěryhodným datačním kontextem. Převážnou většinu analyzovaných vzorků je možné zařadit do období neolitu. Artefakty byly analyzovány dvěma nedestruktivními geochemickými metodami: hodnoty koncentrací zjištěné metodou pXRF byly kalibrovány pomocí výsledků LA-ICP-MS. Na základě výsledků je možné devět vzorků přiřadit s největší pravděpodobností slovenskému zdroji, surovina dvou vzorků pochází pravděpodobně z maďarských zdrojů. and The paper presents the results of the first geochemical analysis conducted on prehistoric obsidian artefacts from Bohemia. Eleven samples from reliably dated contexts were chosen for the study. The vast majority of the analysed samples can be classified into the Neolithic period. The artefacts were analysed using two non-destructive geochemical methods: concentration values determined by portable X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (pXRF) were calibrated using the results of laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Based on the results, the origin of nine samples can, with the greatest degree of probability, be traced to Slovakia, the other two to Hungary.
Do okruhu vybraných otázek náleží: vývoj a charakter osídlení a opevnění, organizace plochy hradiště, charakter sídlištní zástavby, pohřbívání, sakrální stavby, doklady přítomnosti elity, doklady řemesel a obchodu, přírodní prostředí, charakter osídlení v okolí a zázemí hradiště. and The Early Medieval Budeč – the source material and a summary of knowledge (On the problem of central place function). This contribution is a balanced assessment of knowledge to date regarding the development and function of the hillfort at Budeč, one of the largest and archaeologically best investigated early medieval fortified sites in Bohemia. Among the questions raised are those of the development and character of settlement and fortification, the organisation of areas within the hillfort, the character of the settlement structures, burial, sacred structures, the presence of an elite, evidence for crafts and trade, the natural environment, the character of settlement around and in the hinterland of the hillfort.
Nové nálezy patrně importovaného nákončí pochvy meče rozšiřují dosud známou škálu těchto artefaktů z českého území. and An openwork bronze scabbard chape was found on the slopes of Pákova Hill in the Central Bohemian Uplands (cadastral territory of Lhota u Medvědic); based on exact parallels from Kelheim, it can be dated to the 11th century and/or beginning of the 12th century. Another fragment was found in Roudnice in the district of Hradec Králové, and another in Ždánice na Moravě, which featured slightly different openwork decoration. The new finds of apparently imported scabbard chapes increase the hitherto known scale of these artefacts in Bohemia.
Příspěvek jej uvádí do kontextu archeologických (zejména švýcarských) a dalších pramenů, otevírá otázku textilní produkce v hospodářství feudálních sídel, pokouší se o rekapitulaci zpráv o výzkumu z r. 1896, interpretaci tehdy odkryté situace a datování evropsky významného nálezového celku. and A pair of iron loom temple ends, previously considered as atypical arrows, was identified in the collection of finds from the Semonice fortified manor near Jaroměř (Eastern Bohemia). The find, dated by means of accompanying material to the beginning of the 14th century, is the oldest evidence of a horizontal loom and the related weaving technology within the territory of the Czech Lands. The paper puts the find in the context of archaeological (especially Swiss) and other sources, opens the question of textile production in the economy of feudal estates and attempts to review a research report from 1896 offering an interpretation of the context uncovered at the time and a dating of a find assemblage with European significance.
Počáteční stadium eneolitu patří na území Čech k obdobím nálezově silně podreprezentovaným. Stále tedy má význam pracovat i s nedostatečně dokumentovanými materiály – což je případ nálezového souboru z Hřebče, lokality z jihozáp. výspy středočeské sídelní ekumeny. Jde zjevně o další příklad dlouhodobě zanášených objektů, příp. terénních muld. and The initial stage of the Eneolithic period is a period much under-represented on Bohemian territory. It therefore makes sense to continue working even with insufficiently documented materials – which is the case with the find assembly from Hřebeč (distr. Kladno), a site on the south-western edge of the Central Bohemian settlement ecumene. The assembly, collected apparently from a larger clay-pit, is noteworthy not only in terms of quality and number, but also in terms of chronological scope, covering the period from the Bohemian Late Lengyel to the Late Michelsberg/Early Funnel Beaker culture (ca. 4400/4300 – 3900/3800 BC cal.). This is evidently an example of long-term siltation of features, or low ground terrain, as shown in similar situations from Bohemia and Moravia.
Srovnání nevelkého množství podobných nálezových situací může naznačovat, že nízké zastoupení zahloubených sídlištních objektů v českých lokalitách je spíše důsledkem jejich původní funkce a využití v rámci sídelního areálu než redukcí v průběhu archeologizace a případných zásahů do terénu včetně archeologického výzkumu. and Area excavation in the sand-pit near the Vlíněves municipality, Mělník distr., accomplished in the years 1999–2008, yielded – apart from a number of finds from different periods of the agricultural prehistory – also finds of the Bell Beaker culture. Finds of this culture, recorded in settlement context, are presented and their find context and spatial distribution within the excavated area discussed. Comparison of the few similar find situations may suggest that the low incidence of sunken settlement features at Czech sites is due to their original purpose and use within the settlement area rather than their reduction during archaeologization or potential terrain interventions including archaeological excavation.
Text je tak zároveň příspěvkem k problematice chronologické uzavřenosti nálezových souborů ze sídlištních objektů. and Extensive rescue excavation recently carried out at the construction of the Kolín ring road yielded important information sources also for the Middle Eneolithic period. The present article, accounting for eight features of the given period from area I-9, represents one of the results of their progressive publication. From the analytical point of view, two large assemblages are substantial, providing evidence of several archaeological cultures. The dominant component consists in finds from the early stage of the Řivnáč culture, sporadically accompanied by chronologically corresponding imports or imitations of the Bošáca culture pottery, recorded in the materials from the Kolín ring road for the second time already. Pottery sherds of the Silesian branch of the Globular Amphora culture were identified in one of the features and are interpreted as evidence of the settlement horizon subsequent to the abandonment of the Řivnáč culture settlement. The text thus contributes also to the issue of chronological closure of find contexts of settlement features.
Eneolitické představovaly ceněnou komoditu, často dávanou do hrobů příslušníků elity. Oproti tomu dvě třetiny severských dýk z mladoúnětického období vykazují vazbu na říční a suchozemské komunikační směry a značná část jich je ze sídlišť charakteru centrálních míst či uzlových bodů. Dýky v této době zřejmě nebyly předmětem směny, ale jejím průvodním znakem. Je pravděpodobné, že zčásti patřily k výbavě lidí účastnících se provozu na dálkových komunikacích, spojujících alpskou rudnou oblast s únětickou kulturou a severským okruhem. and Finds of silicite daggers in Bohemia (52 specimens) come from two productions circuits – the southern, subalpine circuit, and the northern, Baltic circuit – and date to five horizons between the Middle Eneolithic and the Early Bronze Age. Some of the lance-shaped daggers from the context of Eneolithic cultures are of southern origin (Cham, Řivnáč, Corded Ware culture – from Bavarian tabular chert), while others are of northern origin (protoand early Únětice culture). Later types of Nordic daggers with handles date to the Early Bronze Age (late Únětice culture). A substantial difference is evident in the function of the daggers from the two periods. The Eneolithic daggers represented a valuable commodity that was often buried with members of the elite as a grave good. On the other hand, two-thirds of the Nordic daggers from the late Únětice period show a link to river and overland routes; a substantial number of these daggers are from settlements with the nature of a central location or junction points. In this period daggers were apparently not a subject of exchange but rather an attendant trait. It is probable that some of the daggers were part of the gear of people involved in the operation of travel over the long-distance routes connecting the ore territory in the Alps with Únětice culture and the Nordic circuit.
Závěrem jsou porovnávány jednotlivé komponenty aglomerace – hrad, opevněné předhradí, jižní neopevněné předhradí a podhradí. and The current knowledge regarding Žatec in the Early Middle Ages. The submitted work provides a spatial demarcation of the early medieval Žatec agglomeration and addresses the development of this location. Due to the fact that the overwhelming majority of research has not yet been processed, the work approaches the subject in more general terms. The work likewise presents a chronology of early medieval ceramics at the site. Production pyrotechnical devices and archaeological minting artefacts from the 11th century are discussed in detail. The conclusion of the work offers a comparison of individual components of the agglomeration such as the castle, fortified bailey, the unfortified southern bailey, and the settlements below the castle.
Na prahu pozitivistické epochy tak prakticky naplňoval svoji zásadu přiblížení archeologie k exaktním přírodním vědám. and The article traces the beginnings of the relationship between Bohemian archaeology and the non-life sciences starting in the 1830s. While cooperation with mineralogy and petrography was unilaterally limited to the use of experts to identify the raw materials of polished stone industry for descriptive records and the initiative at the beginning of the study of Quaternary deposits from the 1840s (and of the Palaeolithic from the 1850s) came, on the other hand, from natural scientists (geologists and palaeontologists) with virtually no active participation of archaeologists, the relationship between archaeology and chemistry, in contrast, developed with bilateral cooperation. It began in the 1830s with the investigation of ‘vitrified forts’ and moved to a higher level in 1847 with the chemical analysis of the composition of bronze artefacts, the initiator of which (as the first in the whole of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the time) and partially also an active participant, was the archaeologist Prof. Jan Erazim Vocel. The result of this activity, which lasted until the end of the 1860s, was the classification and chronological dating of bronze artefacts based on the ratio of metals in the alloy; in this sense, Vocel as early as 1853–1855 created a relative chronology that is essentially consistent with today’s state of knowledge. Therefore, on the threshold of the positivist era, he had succeeded in his principle of bringing archaeology closer to the exact natural sciences.
The discovery was made in 2005 in an early La Tène settlement of a stamped body sherd, apparently from an early La Tène Linsenflasche. The zoomorphic decoration is regarded as being most closely related to material generally from the south and west which certainly may well have included the ‘situla art’ of Este and neighbouring regions. General parallels in nomadic art are dismissed and the paper closes with some speculative observations on the significance of the horse in Celtic belief systems. and Z raně laténského sídliště v Kaníně pochází zlomek kolkované keramiky, patrně čočkovité lahve. Zoomorfní výzdoba je srovnávána s nálezy z jižní a západní Evropy, včetně atestinského situlového umění, souvislost s nomádským uměním je přitom odmítnuta. Příspěvek uzavírají úvahy o významu koně v duchovním světě Keltů.
Příspěvek je bilancí pramenů získaných záchranným archeologickým výzkumem přemyslovského hradu. Věnován je předhradí Staré Boleslavi. Kromě otázky jeho vymezení a chronologie se zabývá problematikou opevnění a stratigrafie, sledován je charakter osídlení a konkrétní doklady sídelních aktivit. Cílem současné etapy výzkumu je poznání funkcí vnějšího areálu a definování shod a rozdílů mezi ním a vnitřním hradem v době formování raného českého státu. and This article arises out of source material obtained through archaeological rescue excavations of the Přemyslid stronghold at Stará Boleslav, concentrating on the bailey. In addition to questions regarding delineation and chronology, it addresses problems associated with the fortification and stratigraphy of the bailey, tracing the character of the settlement and specific evidence for settlement activities. The aim of the present stage of research is to understand the function of the outer area, and to define the similarities and differences between this and the inner stronghold during the period in which the early Bohemian state was coalescing.
Soubor obsahuje vedle keramické misky a souboru laténského ženského kruhového šperku i jedinečnou importovanou bronzovou mísu středoitalského původu. Rozbor depotu a provedená makrozbytková a palynologická analýza umožňují klást si otázky o vztahu střední Evropy a Středomoří, o lidské přítomnosti v regionu a o rituálních aktivitách v době laténské. and The article presents an assemblage of artefacts discovered at the foot of a rock near Stebno (Louny distr.) and interpreted as a ritual hoard from stage LT B1/B2 from which there are no other traces of human presence in the region. The assemblage included a pottery bowl, La Tène women’s ring ornament set and a unique bronze basin of central Italian origin. An analysis of the hoard, including macro-remains and palynological analyses, raises questions on the relationship between central Europe and the Mediterranean, the human presence in the region during the La Tène period and on ritual activities in the La Tène period.
Nejpravděpodobnější zdrojovou oblastí českých nálezů se jeví Zemplínské vrchy na jihovýchodním Slovensku, méně pravděpodobné jsou Tokajsko-zemplínské vrchy v severovýchodním Maďarsku. and The work provides an overview of Bohemian finds of prehistoric chipped artefacts made from obsidian. Attention is also paid to the Late Neolithic period, when the share of this raw material in Bohemian assemblages culminates and, at the same time, the finds can be more accurately dated. Two of the richest assemblages, which come from Smiřice and Plotiště nad Labem near Hradec Králové, are analysed in detail. The work also expands its spatial framework to include the Svitavy region due to the close ties between this area and east Bohemia. Obsidian was processed at Stroked Pottery culture settlements in the form of nodules brought to the sites; based on the internal construction of artefacts, only a small number of pieces were extracted at the processing sites. The most probable source of raw material for Bohemian finds are Zemplínské vrchy (the Zemplín Highlands) in southeast Slovakia, while Tokajsko-zemplínské vrchy (the Tokaj-Zemplín Highlands) in northeast Hungary are also possible, albeit less likely.
Vzhledem ke své poloze představuje důležitý doklad proměn osídlení a vývoje v blízkosti raně středověkého mocenského centra, funkčního do 13. století. and Rescue excavations on the village square of Vraclav (Pardubice Region) uncovered a feature with a circular ground plan that was interpreted as a well. The upper part of the fill was composed of a layer with pottery from the 13th century; the lower portion of the fill was made up of sediments that showed gradual siltation, including isolated pottery fragments of the same age. The well became defunct during the course of the 13th century or in the early years of the 14th century. Due to its position, the well represents important evidence of transformations in settlement and development in the vicinity of an early medieval centre of power that functioned until the 13th century.
V tomto příspěvku prezentujeme okolnosti a kontext nálezu, výsledky mikroskopického pozorování, popis amuletu a výsledky materiálových analýz, včetně vytvoření modelových vizualizací struktury olověné tabulky, překlad a komentář latinského textu a jeho zasazení do širšího kontextu analogických nálezů z Evropy. Prováděné analýzy zároveň otevírají problematiku nedestruktivního zkoumání artefaktů výjimečných svým provedením. Obvyklé postupy rozvinutí olověného plechu jsou invazivní a neumožňují zachovat autenticitu předmětu v jeho původní složené podobě. and A lead amulet with an engraved Latin inscription was discovered in 2014 during regular investigations of the ploughed land and eroded wooded hillsides of the multicultural hillfort at the Na Dřevíči site (Rakovník district). Without parallels thus far in the Bohemian environment, the artefact was identified on the basis of comparisons with finds of lead tablets with Latin texts from German and Scandinavian sites of the 11th–13th century, which were usually unfolded after their discovery for the purpose of reading. This article presents the circumstances and context of the find, the results of microscopic observations, the description of the amulet and the results of material analyses, including the creation of model visualisations of the structure of the lead tablet, a translation and commentary of the Latin text and its placement into the broader context of parallel finds from Europe. The conducted analyses also raise the issue of the non-destructive investigation of singular finds. The usual methods for unfolding the lead sheet are invasive and do not permit the preservation of the authenticity of the artefact in its original folded form.
K těžbě a zpracování Kounovské švartny docházelo v LT B2-C1 a vzácný výskyt švartnových výrobků v kontextu LT C2-D1 připouští různý výklad. and Sapropelite from the oppidum of Stradonice. During the revision of old finds from the La Tène oppidum of Stradonice in Central Bohemia several artefacts made of Kounov sapropelite, unknown until now, were recorded. As well as one or two rings there are also some relatively rare products – perforated discs, the result of secondary working of sapropelite waste; their practical as well as symbolic role is considered. Kounov sapropelite mining and subsequent working took place in LT B2-C1. The rare occurence of sapropelite products in the subsequent LT C2-D1 context is also discussed.
V rámci tohoto druhu keramiky lze pozorovat proměny, které se v produkci malých lokálních komunit objevují nezávisle na vnějších impulsech. and The article underlines the need to re-discuss the prevailing views in archaeological literature on the provenance and transformation stages of completely wheel-turned ceramics decorated with zoned ornament. This class of ceramics was used in the Early Middle Ages (for about 100 years) by communities living in the area of southern Greater Poland and the north-eastern part of Lower Silesia. The previous ideas suggesting a close relationship between zoned ceramics and vessels produced in northern Bohemia are reconsidered, with the internal diversity of zoned ceramics being pointed out. We argue that inspiration in ceramics manufacturing came not only from the south (Bohemia), but also from the north (Pomerania) and the west (the middle Elbe region), and that there were also changes that appeared independently of these impulses in the ceramics production of small, native communities.
Příspěvek navazuje na předchozí článek o nálezech z halštatského kultovního místa na vrchu Burkovák u Nemějic, z něhož mj. pochází i rozsáhlá kolekce keramických plastik. Cílem je prozkoumání povrchu těchto plastik z náhodně vybraného vzorku z hlediska paleodermatoglyfiky, jejich předběžné posouzení z hlediska fragmentace, vlastností keramické hmoty a stop na povrchu předmětů. and The contribution is linked to the preceding article on finds from the Hallstatt cultic area on the peak of Burkovák near Nemějice, from which an extensive collection of ceramic sculptures also comes. The aim of this contribution is the examination of the exterior of these sculptures from a paleodermatoglyphic perspective, and a preliminary assessment of these from the point of view of fragmentation, the properties of the ceramic material, and marks on the exterior of the objects.
The Patent of Toleration of the year 1781 cleared the way for activities of two Protestant churches in the Habsburg Monarchy. In the two borderland regions chosen for analysis - the regions of Děčín and Šluknov - the Protestant inhabitants were affected by the religious influences from Saxony that acquired various forms. From the period before the year 1620 there was, exceptionally, preserved the Lutheran religion, whose followers visited churches on the Saxon side of the border. Also, the regions were continuously settled by Saxon immigrants who were not organized within the structures of the Augsburg confession. Only after the commencement of industrialization and the subsequent wave of Saxon immigration was made possible the establishment of independent Protestant choirs. Absolutely exceptional was the Lutheran choir of Saxon officials in Podmokly that was founded after railroad had been finished in 1851. Already before the year 1850 the mission of the renewed Unity of Brethren from Herrnhut instigated the popular religious movement. At the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth century, religious propaganda of the movement „Away from Rome“ (Los von Rom), in many cases supported from Saxony, found response in these regions. The typology of religious influences from Saxony and their manifestations on the Bohemian side of the border, established on the basis of the examples of Děčín and Šluknov regions, could be used for the nineteenth century also for other borderland regions inhabited predominantly by German-speaking population.
This article evaluates once more the historiographic and literary images of John of Bohemia and his son Charles IV in Italian texts from the 14th and early 15th centuries. What we find is a peculiar mixture of criticism and apotheosis, sometimes stated by the same authors, depending on the point in time they were writing, and of course the expectations of their potential readers. While John of Bohemia faced overwhelming expectations from Dante after the death of his father, he was branded a naïve yet greedy papal mercenary from the beginning of his Italian Expedition in the early 1330s. His son was more successful in avoiding negative stereotypes and harsh criticisms during his Italian expeditions in his youth, as well as in 1354/55 and 1368/69. In the end, however, even chroniclers that are traditionally considered to have had a positive view of the Luxemburg king and emperor harshly rejected his political actions in Italy. Most of the time, this is connected with the financial interests all foreign monarchs had when establishing temporary rulerships in Italian cities, and the monetary pressures this bore on their citizens; the worn-out cliché, both of contemporaries and historical researchers, that labelled foreign, Central European monarchs as barbaric intruders, could hardly be confirmed. Charles and his father are blamed for being unable to solve the structural problems of Italian and Imperial politics.
C) „Hrobové“ jámy bez kosterních pozůstatků a bez nálezů, ale s výraznou fosfátovou anomálií respektující svým tvarem i velikostí půdorys jámy. and Burial rites: uniform or diverse? Interpretation of the results of phosphate soil analysis at the Únětice culture burial site in Prague 9 – Miškovice. Phosphate soil analysis was successfully used as a supplement to archaeological and anthropological observations at the Early Bronze Age burial site in Prague 9 – Miškovice. In addition to „regular“ burials with complete preserved skeletons resting in an anatomical position, the soil analysis was used to document heretofore unknown forms of burial (approximately 45 % of all uncovered graves): A) The burial of separate bones (in some cases in caskets made from organic material) without soft tissue, often with gifts and characterized by complete or fragmentary skeletal remains spread out or arranged in the bottom of the grave pit, without a phosphate anomaly. B) So-called „cenotaph“ (empty) graves situated between other graves. The shapes of cenotaph graves do not differ from other graves, but do not contain any bones or other objects. The cenotaph graves do not have a phosphate anomaly, but one of them has a stone packing. C) „Grave“ pits with neither skeletal remains nor finds, but with a distinct phosphate anomaly respecting the shape and even the size of the grave.
Autor se pokusil o dílčí komentář k osmisvazkovému projektu Archeologie pravěkých Čech, a to z pozice aktivního účastníka přípravy syntéz pravěku Čech z roku 1978 i 2007–2008. Nová syntéza uspokojivě shrnuje výsledky českého terénního výzkumu i stav zpracování pramenů, ale – podle názoru autora – faktografické limity domácích pramenů spolu s dnešní úrovní integrace výsledků humanitních a přírodních věd omezují možnosti jejich celistvého interpretačního využití. Další rozvoj, resp. přežití oboru bude záviset dílem na míře úspěšnosti integrace českého výzkumu v rámci Evropy, dílem na schopnosti archeologů přesvědčit domácí veřejnost, že péčí a hospodařením s archeologickými prameny plníme nepominutelnou společenskou objednávku nadnárodního dosahu. and The author comments on the eight-volume Archeologie pravěkých Čech [Archaeology of Prehistoric Bohemia] from the position of an active participant in the preparation of the synthesis of information concerning prehistoric Bohemia in 1978 and 2007–2008. This new synthesis provides a satisfactory summary of the results of Czech field research as well as the state of the processing of sources. However, in the opinion of the author, the factographic limits of domestic sources together with today’s unsatisfactory integration of the results of the humanities and natural sciences restricts the possibilities of their cohesive interpretive use. Further progress, or even the survival of the field, will depend in part on the success of the integration of Czech research into the framework of Europe and in part on the ability of archaeologists to convince the public that care and management of archaeological sources is a vital social mission of supranational importance.
V rámci záchranného výzkumu polykulturního sídliště na hranici katastrů Úhřetice a Tuněchody byly prozkoumány zahloubené části dvou pyrotechnologických objektů z doby římské. Analýza mazanice umožnila vytvořit testovatelné hypotézy o konstrukci zařízení a aplikovaných technologických postupech. and The sunken parts of two pyrotechnological features from the Roman period were studied during rescue excavations of a polycultural settlement. The aim of the article is to reconstruct the construction procedures, and the form and function of these facilities by means of a multidisciplinary approach employing petrographic, sedimentological, mineralogical, geochemical analyses, xylotomy, and by the analysis of plant macro-remnants and plant imprints. Fragments of sparitic carbonate, evidence of the use of the kilns for the firing of lime, were identified through the analysis of the ashy layers from the fill of the feature. The analysis of the daub enabled the formulation of a testable hypothesis on the construction of the kiln and the applied technological procedures.
Příspěvek se zabývá vícečetným pohřebním kontextem z Velkých Přílep (okr. Praha–západ), datovaným do starší doby bronzové. The work focuses on the context of a multiple burial of 6 individuals from Velké Přílepy (distr. Prague-west), dated to the Early Bronze Age. The study is based on the interdisciplinary cooperation between archaeology and biological anthropology, focusing on the theoretical issues linked to a past living culture (intentionality, rise and purpose of burial complex) and its transformation into archaeological record. The study of the transformation of formal (damage, decomposition and disintegration of bone tissue), positional (disarticulation of bone joints) and estimation of some anthropological parameters has already taken place during the fieldwork. Topics such as the intentionality of the rise of the burial complex, the reconstruction of the advancement of its formation and the purpose within the given cultural environment will be covered.
V roce 2001 jsme odebrali vzorky pro fosfátovou půdní analýzu přímo z řezů pravěkým kulturním souvrstvím a zahloubenými objekty z mladší a pozdní doby bronzové (Ha A1 – Ha B2) v Praze 10 – Záběhlicích. Naše výsledky ukazují široké možnosti využití geochemických metod, např. jinak hojně využívané fosfátové půdní analýzy, i v tomto směru. and Samples for soil phosphate analysis were withdrawn directly from sections through prehistoric cultural stratigraphy and Late and Final Bronze Age (Ha A1 – Ha B2) sunken features at Prague 10 – Záběhlice in 2001. In the vertical section of deposits of anthropological origin it was possible, with the aid of soil phosphate analysis, to clearly distinguish the contaminated from the uncontaminated layers, and attempt in this way to delimit particular horizons of human activity – even though the layers were conspicuously distinguishable visually. Further, it was possible to demonstrate that the layers enriched with phosphorus were allochthonous to the pit fills, and therefore that the pits had not been used for the clearance of phosphate-enriched waste. Having been emptied (after its contents had been used?) not a single pit long remained empty; all were filled relatively quickly with material that did not come from their immediate area, from the surrounding cultural stratigraphy, but from greater distances (up to several dozen metres). These results exemplify the broad potential of the application of geochemical methods, such as the otherwise widely used soil phosphate analysis, even in this regard.
Na základě rozboru keramiky ze situací spojených se zánikovou fází ohrazení dvorce autorka stanoví dobu zániku palisády, resp. dvorce, a zařazuje ji do historických okolností známých z dalších pramenů. and This article is a methodological contribution to the clarification of the period involving the demise of the ducal curtis at the Early Medieval stronghold at Budeč in Central Bohemia. The grounds of the curtis that featured a palisade enclosure (ca 4500 m2) also included the Rotunda of St. Peter in the south western part of the stronghold acropolis, which was founded by Duke Spytihněv I (ruled 895–915) according to written records from the 10th century. Based on an analysis of pottery from the situations linked to the phase of the demise of the enclosed curtis, the author determines the period of the demise of the palisade enclosure, or the curtis, and places it into historical contexts known from other sources.
On the finds from Rubín Hill (NW Bohemia) and the importance of the site in the Hallstatt and Early La Tène period. An analysis of a hitherto neglected assemblage of metal finds of predominantly foreign provenance, whose origin in the area of a fortified settlement on the peak of Rubín Hill is documented by archive sources, proves the settlement of this locality in the Hallstatt period. From the point of view of the structure of the collection of finds and its spatial contexts, the locality is classified as a fortified elevated settlement serving as a residence for the social elite, linked to a network of settlements along a system of roads connecting several regions of northern and southern Europe via Bohemia at the end of the Hallstatt period and the start of the La Tène period. The established interregional contacts were not only connected with the regions to the south and south-west of Bohemia, but were also of intermediary importance for the area to the north of Bohemian territory.
On the “Celtic heritage” in the early Roman period in Bohemia and Central Europe. The article deals with the problem, in what extent the La Tène culture, ascribed to the Celts, influenced in the Central European area the following archaeological cultures ascribed to the Germans. The author concludes that a limited latènean influence can be observed only in Central Germany in the nascent Großromstedt culture. In general, however, the culture of the “Elbe Germans” remained unaffected by the La Tène culture and the so called “Celtic heritage” cannot be observed.
